INTRODUCTION
DoorDash completes over 2.5 billion deliveries per year and is investing heavily in the next generation of delivery automation. This role is part of a small, high-impact team building a new autonomous system from the ground up, with the potential to eventually operate at a massive global scale. We haven't publicly announced this specific project yet.
We are seeking a highly capable, driven, and passionate mechanical engineer to design and develop high performance electric motors. The primary application of these motors is unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propulsion. There are other important motors on our aircraft and within ground equipment that we may decide to develop in house as well.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an exploratory product space with significant opportunity for architectural ownership. This role is on-site in San Francisco's mission district at least 3 days per week. Availability to be onsite 5 days per week is required with flexibility to work from home as appropriate. Occasional travel to suppliers is expected. You will operate in a very fast-paced, prototype-driven environment where hands-on engineering and rapid iteration are encouraged. We provide access to a full machine shop with welding equipment, additive manufacturing tools, electrical integration tools, and significant in-house test capability to enable efficient concept-to-hardware development. This is a senior role that offers autonomy, cross-functional collaboration, mentoring, and opportunities for increasing responsibility.
YOU'RE EXCITED ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE...
- Collaborate closely with:
- Electro-mechanical design experts on winding and magnet design.
- Internal, domestic and foreign manufacturing partners.
- Electrical, systems, structural, aerodynamics, reliability, and test engineers as well as industrial design to refine requirements.
- Design mass and volume optimized rotor and stator structures.
- Bearing selection and bearing system design.
- Electrical wiring and connector selection and integration.
- Motor sensor selection and integration (rotary encoders, temperature, etc.)
- Perform structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize performance and reliability.
- Start to finish ownership of motors from concept through production.
- Build prototypes, fixtures, and test hardware using CNC tools and 3D printers.
- Design for outdoor commercial operation including ingress protection and harsh environmental survival.
WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT YOU BECAUSE...
- Mechanical engineering bachelors degree and 3+ years of experience.
- Experience with dynamic mechanical systems (motors, actuators, mechanisms, etc.)
- Strong 3D modeling (CAD) skills for complex parts and assemblies.
- Self sufficient with at least basic structural and thermal simulation.
- Self sufficient with hands-on prototyping, metal fabrication, 3D printing.
- Competence with assembly and test fixture design.
- Familiar with electromechanical integration and wiring practices.
- Experience designing hardware for outdoor or harsh environments.
- Strong understanding of manufacturability and assembly methods.
- Comfortable working in an exploratory, fast-paced environment.
- Bonus points for experience with electric motor manufacturing processes and equipment.

Tailor your resume to DoorDash's operational scale
DoorDash's Mechanical Technician roles often involve maintaining hardware across high-throughput fulfillment and robotics environments. Frame your experience around uptime metrics, preventive maintenance programs, and cross-functional coordination with software or operations teams rather than standalone repair work.
Clarify your visa category before applying
DoorDash sponsors multiple visa types for technical roles. Knowing whether you need H-1B, E-3, TN, or OPT sponsorship before your first recruiter screen lets you answer timeline questions confidently and avoids delays once an offer is extended.
Target DoorDash's hardware and robotics teams directly
Mechanical Technician openings at DoorDash are frequently tied to its fulfillment automation and last-mile hardware initiatives. Search for requisitions that reference robotics, conveyor systems, or autonomous delivery hardware to find roles most likely to carry sponsorship support.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active sponsorship openings
Many Mechanical Technician listings don't advertise visa sponsorship in the job post itself. Use Migrate Mate to filter DoorDash roles specifically verified for sponsorship so you're only spending time on positions where your visa situation is already accounted for.
Align your offer timeline with H-1B cap deadlines
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Work backward from that date when negotiating your DoorDash start date, and ask the recruiter early whether they can support premium processing to reduce uncertainty.
Gather technical certifications before the offer stage
DoorDash's hiring process for Mechanical Technicians often includes a practical skills assessment. Having documented certifications in areas like pneumatics, PLC operation, or electrical systems ready before your offer accelerates DOL and USCIS filing once HR initiates sponsorship paperwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DoorDash sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Technicians?
Yes, DoorDash sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Technician roles. The company has an established immigration program that handles H-1B petitions through the annual USCIS lottery process, with cap-exempt options available in some circumstances. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, a transfer to DoorDash avoids the lottery entirely and can proceed year-round.
How do I apply for Mechanical Technician jobs at DoorDash?
Apply directly through DoorDash's careers page or use Migrate Mate to browse Mechanical Technician openings at DoorDash that are verified for visa sponsorship. Tailor your application to highlight hands-on experience with automated systems, hardware maintenance workflows, and any cross-functional work with software or operations teams, since DoorDash's technical environment spans both physical and digital infrastructure.
Which visa types does DoorDash commonly sponsor for Mechanical Technician roles?
DoorDash sponsors a range of visa categories for technical roles, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa, E-3 visa, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and Green Card pathways such as EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality and current status. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, Canadian and Mexican nationals can use TN visa, and current students on F-1 can begin on OPT before transitioning to H-1B.
What qualifications does DoorDash expect for Mechanical Technician positions?
DoorDash typically looks for hands-on experience with automated or electromechanical systems, familiarity with preventive maintenance programs, and the ability to troubleshoot hardware in fast-paced environments. Roles tied to fulfillment centers or robotics operations often favor candidates with PLC experience, conveyor systems knowledge, or backgrounds in manufacturing or warehouse automation rather than general repair backgrounds.
How long does visa sponsorship typically take once DoorDash extends an offer?
Timeline depends on your visa category. E-3 and TN petitions can move within weeks of an offer. H-1B transfers for candidates already in status typically resolve in two to three months, faster with premium processing through USCIS. New H-1B cap cases require winning the March lottery, meaning your start date won't be before October 1. Aligning your offer negotiation to these windows prevents complications after signing.
