Customer Agent is central to Klaviyo's vision for AI-powered customer engagement. It delivers real-time, contextually aware conversations that help brands support, convert, and retain millions of consumers. We are just beginning to unlock what is possible, and we are looking for an engineering leader who is eager to define that future.
We are seeking someone with deep experience building and scaling agentic systems and AI-enabled products. You will shape how Customer Agent evolves into a highly extensible and reliable platform. This includes setting technical direction in partnership with your team, developing and growing the team, driving foundational architectural decisions through the team, and keeping pace with rapid advances in the AI ecosystem. Although this is a leadership role, we value candidates with strong hands-on engineering experience who can engage deeply with complex technical problems.
In this role, you will own the team's mission, strategy, and roadmap. You will work closely with leaders across engineering, product, data science, and go-to-market functions to define requirements, set priorities, and measure success. You will guide system design, ensure platform reliability, and deliver features that significantly improve customer conversations and outcomes. You will also lead teams that apply machine learning models and LLM-based APIs to create adaptive and personalized conversational agents.
This position is ideal for a leader who wants to shape the next generation of conversational AI and redefine how brands and customers interact at global scale.
How You Will Make a Difference:

- Collaborate on project planning, define achievements, identify dependencies, and ensure business goals are met.
- Actively participate in interviewing, hiring, and team leveling.
- Develop SMART goals and career development plans for direct reports.
- Develop and execute technical strategies aligned with Klaviyo's business goals, ensuring exceptional products and a reliable, user-friendly AI systems roadmap.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to understand needs, resolve blockers, manage expectations, and translate customer needs into valuable AI-driven roadmaps and solutions.
- Advise the team on modeling, system design, experimental design, and implementation decisions.
- Improve engineering-wide processes such as recruiting, performance development, communication, and agile development.
- Stay current with emerging AI trends and technologies, identifying and leveraging opportunities within Klaviyo's ecosystem.
Who You Are:
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with extensive work building AI-driven product features in a full-stack capacity and leading teams who have built scaled systems
- 5+ years of engineering management experience, including managing managers or multiple teams
- Exceptional communication skills, capable of collaborating with diverse stakeholders to translate business/product roadmaps into AI-driven technical roadmaps and solutions that add significant customer and business value.
- Motivated to grow the team through developing current members and attracting new talent to expand capabilities.
- Eager to engage with code, understand the product area, and provide applicable technical mentorship.
- In-depth understanding of common engineering architectures for highly scalable systems.
- Proven ability to lead and deliver complex, multi-quarter projects involving at least two teams.
- Comfortable conducting performance reviews and mentoring team members at all levels.
Bonus Points:
- We love recovering entrepreneurs. If you've ever run your own thing, you'll have company on our team.

Frame Your Leadership Experience for SaaS Scale
Klaviyo's Development Manager roles are centered on scaling engineering teams within a high-growth SaaS environment. Tailor your resume to show experience leading distributed teams through product growth phases, not just headcount management or delivery execution.
Align Your Profile to Klaviyo's Engineering Org
Klaviyo structures its engineering around product domains like data infrastructure and deliverability. Research which domain your background fits, then apply to roles within that vertical. A targeted application to a specific team signals genuine fit and increases sponsor consideration.
Clarify Your Visa Status Early in Screening
Recruiters at mid-stage SaaS companies often screen out sponsorship requests that surface late. State your H-1B transfer need or cap-gap situation in your first recruiter call so the hiring team can confirm budget and legal resourcing before investing further.
Understand the H-1B Transfer Timeline for Active Petitions
If you hold a current H-1B, Klaviyo can file a transfer petition allowing you to start work upon receipt, not approval. USCIS portability rules cover this, but your prior employer's petition must be approvable. Confirm this status before negotiating a start date.
Prepare Documentation That Supports a Specialty Occupation Determination
For Development Manager roles, USCIS scrutinizes whether the position genuinely requires a specialized degree. Gather job descriptions showing technical depth requirements, org charts reflecting direct engineering oversight, and any documentation tying your degree field to the role's core functions.
Use Migrate Mate to Target Klaviyo Openings Efficiently
Tracking Development Manager openings at sponsors like Klaviyo across multiple platforms wastes time. Use Migrate Mate to filter active roles by company and visa sponsorship history so you're applying only where sponsorship has a verified track record for this function.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Klaviyo sponsor H-1B visas for Development Managers?
Yes, Klaviyo sponsors H-1B visas for Development Manager roles. The company has filed H-1B petitions for this function across multiple recent fiscal years, covering both new cap-subject filings and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status. If you're mid-cycle on an existing H-1B, a transfer to Klaviyo typically allows you to begin work once USCIS issues a receipt notice, not waiting for full approval.
Which visa types does Klaviyo commonly use for Development Manager roles?
Klaviyo primarily sponsors H-1B visas for Development Managers, covering initial cap-subject petitions and transfers. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, the company also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways, which involve PERM labor certification filed with the DOL before USCIS adjudicates the immigrant petition. The pathway depends on your qualifications and how your role is classified at the time of filing.
How do I apply for Development Manager jobs at Klaviyo?
Applications go through Klaviyo's careers portal, where roles are listed by product domain and engineering function. You can also find and track current openings filtered by sponsorship history using Migrate Mate, which surfaces active Development Manager roles at verified sponsors. When applying, tailor your materials to the specific engineering team and product area, not just the general job title.
What qualifications does Klaviyo expect for Development Manager roles?
Klaviyo typically looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, combined with hands-on experience managing engineering teams in a SaaS or platform product environment. Prior technical background as an individual contributor is a strong differentiator. Experience leading teams through high-growth phases, shipping at scale, and working cross-functionally with product and data engineering teams is weighted heavily in the hiring process.
How do I plan my timeline if Klaviyo agrees to sponsor my H-1B?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions can only be filed once per year, with USCIS accepting submissions in April for an October 1 start date. If you're selected in the lottery, expect several months between lottery registration and a final decision. Candidates already on OPT or another nonimmigrant status should confirm their authorized work period covers the gap. Premium processing is available through USCIS and reduces adjudication time significantly if your start date is time-sensitive.
