Basic Purpose
The Marketing & Communications Team at the Oklahoma Department of Commerce provides full-service marketing and communications solutions for internal clients and external partner organizations. We focus on supporting in-state programs and services such as the Main Street program, Oklahoma Film + Music, and local economic development partnerships. Additionally, our team works hand in hand with the Economic Development, Growth & Expansion (EDGE) team to provide information to companies looking to expand or open new operations in Oklahoma, as well as to run lead-nurture campaigns for new and existing company contacts.
The Marketing & Communications team currently consists of a division director, project manager, graphic designer, technology and email manager, and multimedia specialist.
Objectives of this role:
- Serve as a lead storyteller for the state, crafting compelling narratives that showcase Oklahoma’s unique competitive advantages and the diverse opportunities available to both residents and businesses.
- Create content that helps position Oklahoma as a premier location for new jobs and investment.
- Create strong messaging promoting Commerce's programs and efforts, and how they positively impact Oklahomans and our communities.
- Grow audiences and increase engagement for existing audiences with high-quality content.
Typical Functions
Editorial & Content Development
- Marketing Collateral: Write and develop high-quality content for a wide range of print and digital assets, including brochures and promotional materials about Commerce’s programs and Oklahoma’s industries and business advantages.
- Newsletters: Identify and write content for monthly and quarterly newsletters for multiple audiences (Oklahomans, Oklahoma communities, out-of-state businesses, etc.)
- Quality Control: Uphold high standards for quality, attention to detail, and brand consistency across all deliverables.
Campaign Management & Optimization
- Lead Nurture Programs: Develop and manage email lead nurture campaigns from inception to execution. Regularly analyze campaign data (open rates, click rates, etc.) to identify trends and implement adjustments that improve engagement and conversion outcomes.
- Data-Driven Insights: Utilize analytics tools to glean actionable insights, improving content performance, adjusting messaging, timing, and other tactics as needed.
Website & Digital Infrastructure
- Web Content Management: Partner with agency leadership, team, and clients to review, update, and refine website copy. Take an active role in implementing these changes to ensure the site remains current and user-friendly.
- Experience with WordPress is preferred but not required.
Collaboration & Support
- Social Media Coordination: Work alongside the internal team to draft and post content for social media accounts, ensuring all posts align with broader agency objectives and active campaigns.
- Cross-division Communication Strategy: Directly collaborate with agency departments as needed to ensure communication goals are met.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- The ideal candidates will be proactive, ambitious, self-starters with a positive attitude. They must also be able to multitask in a deadline-driven environment and be adaptable to same-day turnarounds and changing priorities.

Tips for Your Content Marketing Specialist Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to channel depth
Employers scan portfolios for proof you can own a channel end to end. Include at least one example showing content strategy, execution, and measurable outcome for a single channel, whether that's organic search, email, or social.
Show SEO results with actual context
Listing keywords or traffic gains without context reads as filler. For each content win on your resume, name the starting condition, what you changed, and the result, so hiring managers can judge whether your experience maps to their situation.
Filter openings by the tools listed
Job postings for this role often hide their real requirements in the tools section. If a listing names HubSpot, Contentful, or a specific CMS, that's a signal about their stack and pace. Match your experience to those tools before applying.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists content marketing specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a content brief as an interview asset
Many content marketing specialist interviews include a take-home or live brief exercise. Practice writing a one-page brief for a hypothetical campaign before your interview so you can move quickly and show your strategic thinking without prompting.
Negotiate scope before negotiating anything else
Before discussing compensation, clarify what the role actually owns: editorial calendar, SEO, paid amplification, or all three. Knowing the scope tells you the workload and gives you concrete leverage when the conversation shifts to offer terms.
Content Marketing Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most content marketing specialists?
The companies hiring the most content marketing specialists right now include Deloitte, Esri, and BKF Engineers, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in SaaS, healthcare technology, and direct-to-consumer e-commerce companies that run content-led acquisition strategies.
How many content marketing specialist jobs are remote?
About 32% of content marketing specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more location-flexible roles in marketing. SEO-focused and email-focused positions tend to be the most remote-friendly, while roles tied closely to brand events or in-person content production are more likely to require an on-site presence.
How do you become a content marketing specialist?
Most content marketing specialists start by building a writing portfolio through freelance work, a personal blog, or volunteer projects that demonstrate channel ownership. From there, you develop working knowledge of SEO tools and at least one CMS, then pursue entry-level content coordinator or associate roles. Certifications in content marketing or inbound methodology can help you stand out if you're transitioning from another field.
Can you get hired as a content marketing specialist with little experience?
Yes, entry-level content marketing specialist roles exist, but employers expect a portfolio even when they don't require years of formal employment. Published writing samples, a demonstrated grasp of SEO basics, and familiarity with a CMS carry more weight than a degree in most hiring decisions. Internships, contract work, or a few well-executed personal projects give you the proof points you need to compete for junior openings.
What does the content marketing specialist interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a recruiter screen focused on channel experience and tools, followed by a hiring manager interview that goes deeper on strategy, metrics, and past campaigns. Most employers include a writing or content brief exercise, either as a take-home assignment or a live task during a second round. Final rounds often involve meeting cross-functional partners in design, demand generation, or product marketing.
Where can I find and apply to content marketing specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to content marketing specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, channel focus, and industry preference, then apply directly to each one that fits.
