Tips for Your Sales And Business Development Job Search
Quantify revenue impact on your resume
Hiring managers in sales and business development scan for numbers before they read anything else. Replace vague phrases like 'grew accounts' with the actual dollar value of deals closed, pipeline generated, or revenue retained. Percentages and dollar figures make your contribution concrete.
Tailor your outreach methodology to the role
A hunter role focused on net-new logos values cold prospecting volume and conversion rates. A farmer or expansion role values retention metrics and upsell history. Read the job description carefully and lead your resume summary with the motion that matches, not a generic sales pitch about yourself.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists sales and business development openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Match your target market to the employer
If you've sold into mid-market healthcare IT, prioritize employers in that vertical before broadening your search. Interviewers value pattern recognition, and a candidate who already speaks the buyer's language shortens ramp time significantly. Your industry fluency is a differentiator worth surfacing early.
Prepare a deal story for each interview stage
Most sales and business development interviews include at least one structured behavioral question about a complex deal. Prepare two or three specific stories covering deal size, stakeholder map, obstacles, and close. Practicing these out loud, not just in your head, makes delivery under pressure noticeably cleaner.
Negotiate base-to-variable ratio before accepting
Compensation structures in sales and business development vary widely, so ask for the full on-target earnings breakdown and the percentage of the team that actually hits quota. Those two data points tell you more about the real opportunity than the headline number alone.
Sales And Business Development Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most sales and business developments?
The companies hiring the most sales and business developments right now include State Farm, The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company, and Jc Residential And Light Commercial, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly concentrated in technology, financial services, and healthcare sectors.
How many sales and business development jobs are remote?
About 20% of sales and business development openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible functions for location-independent work. Roles focused on inside sales, partnership management, and account management at established companies tend to offer the most remote flexibility compared to field sales or enterprise business development roles.
How do you become a sales and business development?
Start in an entry-level role such as sales development representative or account coordinator to build prospecting and pipeline fundamentals. Develop fluency in at least one CRM platform and learn a structured selling methodology. Move into closing roles by demonstrating consistent quota attainment, then expand scope into strategic accounts or new market development as you progress.
How do you get hired in sales and business development with little or no experience?
Target sales development representative or business development representative roles, which are designed as entry points and emphasize coachability over experience. Highlight any background involving persuasion, negotiation, or relationship-building, including internships, customer service, or volunteer fundraising. Showing you've self-studied a CRM tool and can articulate a basic sales process gives you a concrete edge over candidates who rely only on enthusiasm.
What does the sales and business development interview process look like?
Most hiring processes begin with a recruiter screen focused on your background and compensation expectations, followed by a hiring manager interview covering your sales methodology and past performance. Later rounds often include a mock pitch or discovery call exercise, a panel with cross-functional stakeholders, and a final conversation with a senior leader or VP before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to sales and business development jobs?
You can find and apply to sales and business development jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that fit your experience level, industry background, and preferred work location, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
