Cost Accountant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cost accountant in New York?
A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the standard entry point for cost accountant roles in New York. While New York does not require a state license to work as a cost accountant, earning a CPA through the New York State Board of Public Accountancy or pursuing a Certified Management Accountant designation strengthens your candidacy considerably. Most mid-size and large New York employers list one of these credentials as preferred, particularly in financial services and manufacturing.
How much do cost accountants make in New York?
Cost accountants in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cost accountants in New York?
Employers hiring cost accountants in New York right now include COGENT Infotech, EY, and GlobalFoundries, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of life sciences companies, consumer goods manufacturers, and financial services firms means demand is spread across the state, not limited to New York City alone.
Which New York cities have the most cost accountant jobs?
Binghamton, Buffalo, and Endicott have the most cost accountant openings in New York. New York City leads because of its headquarters density in financial services and consumer goods, while Buffalo and Albany draw openings from regional manufacturing operations and state government contractors that maintain their own cost accounting functions.
Are there remote cost accountant jobs in New York?
Yes, and they are more common than in many accounting specialties because cost accounting work is largely analytical and systems-based. About 44% of cost accountant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to off-site work. Variance reporting, budget modeling, and ERP-based analysis tend to be the tasks most suited to remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a cost accountant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a staff accountant or accounting analyst role at a New York manufacturer or consumer goods company and rotating into cost accounting from there. Large New York employers in life sciences and food production often bring in new graduates through rotational finance programs that include a cost accounting assignment. Pursuing CMA candidacy early distinguishes applicants, and internship experience with any ERP system, even in a general accounting capacity, makes the transition easier.
Where can I find and apply to cost accountant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to cost accountant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to New York employers. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
