Financial Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial consultant in California?
To become a financial consultant in California, you typically need a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or accounting, followed by passing the FINRA Series 65 exam to register as an Investment Adviser Representative, which is required for fee-based advisory work in the state. California-based advisors who also sell securities products must register with the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Many candidates pursue the CFP certification to improve their hiring prospects at California wealth management firms.
Which companies hire financial consultants in California?
Employers hiring financial consultants in California right now include Bank of America, First Command Financial Services, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of high-net-worth individuals and large corporate headquarters means demand comes from both independent registered investment advisors and major national financial institutions with strong California footprints.
Which California cities have the most financial consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego account for the largest share of financial consultant openings in California. San Francisco leads because of its dense concentration of wealth management firms, venture-backed companies, and tech-sector clients with complex financial planning needs, while Los Angeles draws volume from entertainment industry clients, real estate, and large retail banking operations, and San Diego's openings are anchored by biotech, defense contractors, and a growing private wealth sector.
Are there remote financial consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many client-facing financial roles allow. About 11% of financial consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broader adoption of virtual advisory platforms since the pandemic. Financial planning, portfolio review, and client reporting work travel well to remote arrangements, while new client acquisition and relationship-building roles tend to remain in-person or hybrid.
How can I get hired as a financial consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a client service associate or financial planning associate role at a California-based registered investment advisor or regional bank. Firms like Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo Advisors, and Fidelity Investments run structured new-associate programs at their California offices that train candidates without prior advisory experience. Earning the Series 65 license before applying gives a strong competitive edge, and candidates with backgrounds in accounting, banking operations, or insurance find lateral moves into junior consultant roles relatively accessible.
Where can I find and apply to financial consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to financial consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across the state's major markets and industries. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly from the listing.
