Front Desk Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a front desk in California?
Most front desk roles in California require a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for some college coursework in business administration or healthcare. Medical front desk positions often expect knowledge of medical terminology and Electronic Health Records systems. Hotel and corporate roles value customer service experience and bilingual ability, which is a genuine advantage in California's diverse markets. No state-issued license is required for most front desk roles, though medical office settings may request a certified medical administrative assistant credential.
How much do front desks make in California?
Front desks in California earn a median of about $39,360 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,910 for the lowest 10% to over $54,020 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire front desks in California?
Employers hiring front desks in California right now include Crack IT Chiropractic Ne, Hyatt, and UCLA Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large hospital networks, hotel brands, and professional services firms means front desk hiring is ongoing throughout the year across the state.
Which California cities have the most front desk jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Cathedral City have the most front desk openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its large hospitality, healthcare, and entertainment industries, San Francisco's concentration of corporate headquarters and medical centers sustains steady demand, and San Diego's military-adjacent healthcare system and hotel sector keep openings consistent in that market as well.
Are there remote front desk jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Front desk work is largely on-site by nature, as it involves greeting visitors, managing physical office flow, and handling in-person tasks. About 0% of front desk openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be virtual receptionist or remote scheduling coordinator roles rather than traditional front office positions.
How can I get hired as a front desk in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a receptionist or front office assistant role at a large California employer that provides on-the-job training, such as a Kaiser Permanente or Cedars-Sinai outpatient clinic, a hotel front office trainee program, or a property management company. Lateral moves from retail, hospitality, or call center roles are common and well-regarded by California hiring managers. Earning a certified medical administrative assistant credential through a California community college gives candidates a clear advantage for healthcare front desk openings.
