Insurance Sales Consultant Jobs in District of Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance sales consultant in District of Columbia?
To work as an insurance sales consultant in District of Columbia, you must obtain a producer license through the DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, known as DISB. You need to complete pre-licensing education, pass the relevant state exam (property and casualty, life and health, or both), and submit a license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry. Most DC employers prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree, though it is not always required.
Which companies hire insurance sales consultants in District of Columbia?
Companies currently hiring insurance sales consultants in District of Columbia include FTI Consulting, Sikich, and Guidehouse, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. DC's concentration of federal agencies, lobbying organizations, and large association headquarters creates steady demand from insurers and brokerages that specialize in government contractor and employee benefits lines.
Which District of Columbia cities have the most insurance sales consultant jobs?
The cities with the most insurance sales consultant openings in District of Columbia are Washington. Washington DC itself dominates because it is home to the federal government, hundreds of trade associations, and regional offices for the country's largest carriers and brokerages, while neighboring areas benefit from spillover hiring from those same employer bases.
Are there remote insurance sales consultant jobs in District of Columbia?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because insurance sales relies heavily on relationship-building and client meetings. About 67% of insurance sales consultant openings tied to District of Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a post-pandemic shift among larger carriers and national brokerages. The portions of the role most likely to go remote are account management, renewal processing, and inside sales, rather than new business development.
How can I get hired as a insurance sales consultant in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a large carrier or regional brokerage in a customer service representative or policy support role and earning your DC producer license through DISB while on the job. Carriers like Geico and Aetna, which have DC-area operations, run structured onboarding programs that move licensed support staff into sales roles. Completing a life and health or property and casualty pre-licensing course before applying gives candidates a measurable edge in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs in District of Columbia?
You can find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs in District of Columbia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the DC market. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
