Most Virginia employers expect at minimum an associate degree in information technology or a related field, alongside certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+. Given the state's heavy federal contracting presence, pursuing a DoD security clearance eligibility early significantly improves hiring prospects across Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.
How much do IT support engineers make in Virginia?
IT support engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $65,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $44,990 for the lowest 10% to over $101,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it support engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring it support engineers in Virginia right now include SAIC, BMZ, and KBR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Which Virginia cities have the most it support engineer jobs?
Arlington, Chantilly, and Virginia Beach have the most it support engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates due to its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms, while Richmond draws openings from state government, financial services, and healthcare systems, and Hampton Roads benefits from significant military installation and Department of Defense contractor activity.
Are there remote it support engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're limited compared to purely desk-based roles, since much of the work involves hands-on hardware support and on-site troubleshooting. About 33% of it support engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a growing but still minority share. The tasks most commonly offered remotely include Tier 1 help desk, software troubleshooting, and cloud-based systems administration.

Earning CompTIA A+ before applying gives a measurable edge.
