Licensed Therapist Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed therapist in Minnesota?
Becoming a licensed therapist in Minnesota requires completing a master's or doctoral degree in a clinical field such as counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, followed by supervised postgraduate hours and a licensing exam. The Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy oversees credentials including the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist designations, while the Board of Social Work issues the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker credential. Choosing the right license depends on your degree and intended practice setting.
Which companies hire licensed therapists in Minnesota?
Employers hiring licensed therapists in Minnesota right now include LifeStance Health, Sagent Behavioral Health, and Lorenz Clinic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Minnesota's large integrated health systems, county-run community mental health centers, and school districts are among the most consistent sources of full-time clinical openings across the state.
Which Minnesota cities have the most licensed therapist jobs?
Minneapolis, Minnetonka, and Maple Grove have the most licensed therapist openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro drives the largest share of demand because of its concentration of major health systems, nonprofit behavioral health agencies, and county human services departments, while Rochester's openings are closely tied to Mayo Clinic's expansive outpatient and specialty mental health programs.
Are there remote licensed therapist jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, and more than many clinical roles, because telehealth has expanded significantly for outpatient therapy. About 51% of licensed therapist openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting ongoing demand for virtual counseling services. Positions focused on individual talk therapy and outpatient counseling are most likely to offer remote or hybrid schedules, while roles requiring on-site assessments or group treatment generally remain in person.
How can I get hired as a licensed therapist in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for associate or pre-licensed clinician roles at community mental health centers, which regularly hire candidates still completing supervised hours toward full licensure. Hennepin Healthcare, Washburn Center for Children, and PrairieCare are Minnesota employers known to bring on newer clinicians under supervision. Transitioning from adjacent roles such as case manager, mental health practitioner, or crisis counselor is another common route. Completing a clinical practicum at a Minnesota site and pursuing a limited license through the relevant state board strengthens your application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to licensed therapist jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to licensed therapist jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that fit your license type, specialties, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that match your background.
