SUMMARY: The Senior Marketing Content Specialist is responsible for developing, editing, and managing high-quality written content that connects the American Mathematical Society’s diverse audiences - including mathematicians, students, educators, researchers, donors, and the public - to the Society’s programs, publications, meetings, and membership. This role writes, edits, and coordinates news and other content for all Society platforms, including web, email, and print products. This role blends strong writing and editorial expertise with strategic content planning to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency across publications, digital platforms, and marketing communications. The Senior Marketing Content Specialist works closely with subject matter experts, authors, and internal teams to deliver compelling, accessible, and impactful content that aligns with the Society’s mission and brand.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Content Development Writing
- Design, execute, and scale a multi-channel editorial strategy aligned with our strategic plan and SEO targets.
- Track performance across the multi-channel editorial strategy, preparing reports on engagement analytics and metrics and recommendations for optimizing and improving outcomes of editorial content, marketing campaigns, and search visibility.
- Research, write, edit, and proofread a wide range of content and communications materials, including AMS articles, website copy, newsletters, press releases, presentations, slides, promotional content, social media posts, prizes and awards, and obituaries. Translate complex subject matter into clear, engaging language for diverse AMS audiences.
- Own and evolve the AMS brand voice, ensuring exceptional editorial quality, strict style compliance, and rigorous factchecking across all published assets. Collaborate with staff, authors, and contributors to create original content that reflects the AMS brand and mission. Take the lead in editing and assist with the posting, publishing, and promoting Math in the Media digests, Mathematical Moments posters, podcasts, videos, and any other relevant content to promote awareness and appreciation of mathematics.
- Ensure consistent branding, accessibility, and compliance with organizational standards.
Content Strategy and Management
- Collaborates with AMS staff members to produce relevant content of importance for the Society.
- Build distribution playbooks to ensure every high-value content piece is strategically repurposed for LinkedIn, email campaigns, newsletters, and other social media platforms.
- Uses effective communication tools (e.g., presentation, verbal, writing, relationship building, negotiating, listening) to meet needs of audience and/or situation.
- Repurpose editorial content into high-quality digital marketing campaigns implemented on social platforms, email campaigns, and/or other platforms that uses the content strategically to move key audiences toward an action, i.e., joining AMS as a member, attending a meeting, purchasing a book, or driving brand awareness.
- Responsible for managing the Notices digital news presence and providing support in identifying ways to monetize the journal’s online and print assets.
- Partners with the Chief Editor of Notices to solicit, shape, and edit scientific content that reflect the breadth of mathematical activity and community interests.
- Ensures all content adheres to journalistic and editorial standards, including accuracy, fairness, and responsible critique of AMS policies and activities.
- Supports the Chief Editor in ensuring the Notices content supports the AMS’s reputation, mission, and strategic goals.
- Support the development of content strategies that drive engagement across digital and print channels.
- Support the Society thought leadership and media relations strategy, including pitching story ideas and opinion pieces and answering media requests.
- Plan and schedule content for websites, online newsletters, presentations, slides, social media, campaigns, promotions, and other marketing communications activities in which written content is necessary, in coordination with the Office of Communications and Marketing Team.
- Repurpose and optimize existing content for multiple platforms and audiences.
- Regularly update website content (text, images, multimedia, and documents).
Collaboration and Project Support
- Partner with Creative Services and the integrated marketing communications specialists to produce written content with visuals, graphics, and multimedia.
- Contribute to content planning for events, campaigns, and organizational initiatives.
- Own the content analytics dashboard. Regularly track the performance of digital content, including web, social, and email, and recommend improvements based on analytics.
- Coordinate with IT/developers on updates, integrations, and security.
- Collaborate with designers to improve visual presentation and usability.
- Other duties as assigned.
TRAVEL: 10-20%
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Report to Director of Communications and Marketing; working collaboratively, Society-wide and with officers and volunteers, attending certain Society events, including committee meetings, as assigned.
External: Relationships may include various AMS constituents: members, partners, customers, and vendors; counterparts at sister societies and other organizations; members of the mathematical, academic, and broader scientific community.

- 4+ years of experience in content writing, marketing, communications, or related field.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data and metrics to drive decision-making.
- Experience managing campaigns across multiple channels (emails, web, print, social media).
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, collegial, and strategic partnerships across departments to develop and publish engaging, audience-focused web content.
- Experience partnering with cross-functional teams to support website functionality, performance, accessibility, and user experience, helping ensure a reliable and user-friendly digital presence.
- Demonstrated ability to glean insights from data, such as webpage impact via Google Analytics
- Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and digital marketing tools.
- Experience in the nonprofit sector and/or membership organizations is highly desirable.
