Oncology Sales Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an oncology sales specialist in California?
Most oncology sales specialists in California enter the role with a bachelor's degree in a life science or business discipline and prior pharmaceutical or medical device sales experience. California does not require a state-issued license specific to pharmaceutical sales, but many employers expect candidates to hold or quickly obtain Certified Medical Representative credentials. Breaking in often means starting as a primary care or specialty sales representative at a California biotech or pharma company, then building clinical oncology knowledge before transitioning into an oncology territory role.
Which companies hire oncology sales specialists in California?
Employers hiring oncology sales specialists in California right now include Shields Health Solutions, Amgen, and AstraZeneca, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of biotech and pharmaceutical headquarters, particularly in South San Francisco and San Diego's Torrey Pines corridor, means the state consistently produces more oncology sales openings than most other regions in the country.
Which California cities have the most oncology sales specialist jobs?
The cities with the most oncology sales specialist openings in California are Los Angeles, Chico, and Fresno. The distribution follows California's major pharmaceutical and biotech hubs, with the Bay Area driven by companies headquartered in South San Francisco and the greater Los Angeles and San Diego markets anchored by large cancer centers and a dense concentration of life sciences employers running active commercial teams.
Are there remote oncology sales specialist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Oncology sales is fundamentally a field-based role that requires in-person visits with oncologists, cancer center pharmacists, and clinical staff, so most positions require regular territory travel. About 80% of oncology sales specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those remote-eligible positions tend to be in clinical education, medical science liaison, or inside sales support functions rather than traditional territory roles.
How can I get hired as an oncology sales specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a primary care or specialty pharmaceutical sales role first, then building clinical knowledge and quota performance before moving into oncology. Large California employers such as Genentech, Gilead Sciences, and Amgen run structured new representative programs that train candidates with strong sales backgrounds but limited clinical exposure. Moving laterally from adjacent roles like clinical specialist, patient services manager, or medical device sales representative is also common and gives candidates hands-on healthcare-setting experience that oncology hiring managers value.
Where can I find and apply to oncology sales specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to oncology sales specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device employers. Find the roles that fit your experience and territory preference and apply directly to the ones that match.
