People Operations Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a people operations manager in Virginia?
The typical path into a people operations manager role in Virginia starts with a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or organizational psychology, followed by several years in HR coordinator, generalist, or analyst roles. Virginia does not require a state-issued license for this position, but employers consistently favor candidates holding SHRM-CP or PHR credentials from the Society for Human Resource Management or the HR Certification Institute. Building experience with compliance, workforce systems, and employee relations strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do people operations managers make in Virginia?
People operations managers in Virginia earn a median of about $165,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,130 for the lowest 10% to over $272,070 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire people operations managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring people operations managers in Virginia right now include Capital One, Target, and Omni Hotels, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of large defense contractors, federal consulting firms, and major health systems means demand for people operations talent remains steady well beyond the typical corporate hiring cycles seen in other states.
Which Virginia cities have the most people operations manager jobs?
The cities with the most people operations manager openings in Virginia are Richmond, McLean, and Fairfax. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal contractors and technology companies headquartered or regionally anchored there, while Richmond draws demand from financial services and state government employers, and Virginia Beach reflects the broader Hampton Roads defense and healthcare employment base.
Are there remote people operations manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 51% of people operations manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on digital HR systems, policy development, and virtual employee support. The functions most commonly offered remotely include HRIS administration, HR analytics, and onboarding program management, while employee relations and site-level support roles tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a people operations manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a people operations coordinator or HR generalist role first, then building toward a manager title. Large Virginia employers such as Leidos, Northrop Grumman, and Inova Health System run rotational HR associate and early-career programs that accept candidates from adjacent backgrounds in project coordination, payroll, or office administration. Earning a SHRM-CP credential or completing a SHRM certification prep course at a Virginia community college or George Mason University gives early-career candidates a concrete edge when competing against more experienced applicants.
