Key Responsibilities
Provide technical support to pre-sale engineering and sales teams by developing complete scopes of work, equipment lists, sequences of operations, and labor estimates for complex fire alarm and life safety solutions.
Review bid specifications, contract drawings, code narratives, and customer requirements to prepare exception lists, compliance matrices, technical take-offs, and clarification questions for customers or AHJ review.
Develop product pricing by gathering quotes from manufacturers, vendors, and subcontractors to support fire alarm and life safety system designs.
Apply fire alarm, detection, notification, emergency communications, mass notification, and related life safety products to meet project requirements and applicable codes.
Value engineer project specifications while maintaining code compliance, constructability, customer satisfaction, and project profitability.

Pre Sales Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pre sales engineer in Virginia?
Most pre sales engineer roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information technology, or a related technical discipline. Virginia does not require a state-issued license specifically for pre sales engineers, but many employers in the defense and federal IT sectors require candidates to hold or be eligible for a federal security clearance. Building hands-on experience with enterprise solutions, cloud platforms, or cybersecurity tools and completing vendor certifications such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Salesforce significantly strengthens a candidacy.
Which companies hire pre sales engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring pre sales engineers in Virginia right now include CPG Beyond, Exiger, and Idexcel, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal IT integrators, and cloud technology companies makes it one of the more active states for this role.
Which Virginia cities have the most pre sales engineer jobs?
The Virginia cities with the most pre sales engineer openings are Ashburn, Virginia, and Herndon. Northern Virginia dominates due to its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud data center operations, while Richmond draws hiring from financial services and healthcare technology firms, and smaller suburban corridors benefit from the overflow of major employer campuses in those areas.
Are there remote pre sales engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many technical roles, because pre sales work is communication and presentation-driven rather than hands-on. About 50% of pre sales engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the role's strong fit for distributed work. The portions of the role most commonly done remotely include product demos, proposal support, and client discovery calls, while on-site presence is more common for federal or classified-environment engagements.
How can I get hired as a pre sales engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is transitioning from a technical support, solutions consultant, or sales development role at a Virginia-based technology or defense firm. Large Virginia employers like Leidos, SAIC, and Carahsoft regularly hire associate-level technical roles and solutions engineer trainees that serve as direct pipelines into pre-sales. Earning a vendor certification in AWS, Salesforce, or Microsoft Azure demonstrates product fluency and gives candidates a concrete edge. Targeting federal IT integrators in the Northern Virginia corridor, where pre-sales pipelines are well established, is more productive than approaching general commercial employers early in a career.
Where can I find and apply to pre sales engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to pre sales engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings from employers actively hiring. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and target location, and apply directly.
