Principal Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal in New Mexico?
You become a principal in New Mexico by earning a Level III-A Principal License through the New Mexico Public Education Department. The path requires a master's degree in educational leadership or administration, a minimum of five years of licensed teaching experience, and completion of an approved administrator preparation program. Candidates must also pass the required assessments designated by the Public Education Department before the license is issued.
Which companies hire principals in New Mexico?
Employers hiring principals in New Mexico right now include Oracle, Providence, and RS21: A Data Science and Visualization Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's public school districts, Bureau of Indian Education schools, and growing charter networks are the dominant sources of principal openings across the state.
Which New Mexico cities have the most principal jobs?
Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Hobbs have the most principal openings in New Mexico. Albuquerque leads because Albuquerque Public Schools is the state's largest district, while Santa Fe and Las Cruces draw openings through their own municipal districts, charter schools, and proximity to state government and university systems that support affiliated educational programs.
Are there remote principal jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, but they're rare. Principal work is inherently on-site, requiring daily presence in a school building to manage staff, students, and operations. About 62% of principal openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be in district-level administrative or virtual school leadership roles rather than traditional building principal positions.
How can I get hired as a principal in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistant principal or dean of students role, which most New Mexico districts use as the primary pipeline into building leadership. Albuquerque Public Schools and Las Cruces Public Schools regularly post assistant principal openings that do not require prior administrative experience, provided you hold or are eligible for a Level III-A license. Completing a New Mexico-approved administrator preparation program at institutions like New Mexico State University or the University of New Mexico strengthens your application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to principal jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to principal jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state's school districts, charter networks, and educational organizations. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and license level, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
