Tax Accountant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in Virginia?
You become a tax accountant in Virginia by earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and passing the CPA exam, which is administered through the Virginia Board of Accountancy. Virginia requires candidates to complete credit hours in accounting and business before sitting for the exam. While a CPA license is not legally required for all tax accountant roles, most Virginia employers in public accounting, federal contracting, and financial services expect it or treat it as a strong differentiator for advancement.
How much do tax accountants make in Virginia?
Tax accountants in Virginia earn a median of about $58,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,330 for the lowest 10% to over $98,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Virginia?
Employers hiring tax accountants in Virginia right now include Thompson Greenspon, Hantzmon Wiebel LLP, and Casper, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors, financial institutions, and large professional services firms means consistent year-round openings across the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
Fairfax, Charlottesville, and Wise have the most tax accountant openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates due to its dense cluster of federal contractors, consulting firms, and corporate headquarters, while Richmond draws demand from financial services companies and regional accounting firms, and Hampton Roads reflects the presence of large defense and government services employers.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 44% of tax accountant openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based, document-driven nature of tax work. Tax return preparation, research, and compliance review are the tasks most commonly performed remotely, while roles involving client advisory work or partnership with a local finance team often require at least some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a staff accountant or tax associate role at one of Virginia's regional public accounting firms, where structured training programs are designed for candidates without prior tax experience. Large regional firms based in Richmond and Northern Virginia regularly hire new graduates into rotational or tax-track programs. Sitting for the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to tax software through coursework or self-study adds measurable credibility. Lateral moves from roles in bookkeeping, accounts payable, or financial analysis are also common entry points at corporate employers.
