Technical Project Manager Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical project manager in Texas?
The most direct path in Texas is a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field combined with the Project Management Professional credential issued by the Project Management Institute. Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a technical project manager, so the PMP functions as the primary professional benchmark. Many Texas employers, particularly in the energy corridor around Houston and in Dallas-Fort Worth's technology sector, expect candidates to pair that credential with hands-on technical experience before moving into a dedicated project management role.
How much do technical project managers make in Texas?
Technical project managers in Texas earn a median of about $98,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,460 for the lowest 10% to over $162,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical project managers in Texas?
Employers hiring technical project managers in Texas right now include Apple, Amazon, and Google, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy, defense, and enterprise technology companies means openings are distributed across a wide range of industries, giving candidates flexibility to move between sectors while staying in state.
Which Texas cities have the most technical project manager jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Houston have the most technical project manager openings in Texas. Houston's energy corridor and medical center anchor demand there, while Dallas-Fort Worth's dense concentration of corporate headquarters and technology firms drives volume across that metro, and Austin's fast-growing software and semiconductor industry keeps a steady pipeline of openings for candidates who prefer a tech-first environment.
Are there remote technical project manager jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 15% of technical project manager openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the coordination, documentation, and stakeholder communication in this role can be done off-site. The parts of the work most likely to stay remote include sprint planning, status reporting, and vendor management, while on-site presence is typically required during major implementation phases or hardware-adjacent projects.
How can I get hired as a technical project manager in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a technical contributor role such as business analyst, systems analyst, or junior engineer, where you already coordinate tasks and communicate across teams. Large Texas employers including ExxonMobil, Dell Technologies, and defense contractors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area run rotational or associate program management tracks designed for candidates transitioning into the discipline. Earning a CAPM credential from the Project Management Institute before you apply signals readiness, and building a portfolio of even informal project documentation from previous technical roles accelerates hiring conversations significantly.
Where can I find and apply to technical project manager jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to technical project manager jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and preferred location, then apply directly to each one.
