Training Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a training manager in Virginia?
Most training manager roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in human resources, education, or organizational development, though many employers in defense contracting and healthcare also value a master's degree or an MBA. Virginia has no state-issued license specific to training managers, but earning the Certified Professional in Talent Development credential from ATD or a SHRM certification significantly strengthens candidacy. Candidates who build experience in instructional design or as training coordinators within Virginia's large government contracting or hospital sectors move into management roles most reliably.
How much do training managers make in Virginia?
Training managers in Virginia earn a median of about $137,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $98,920 for the lowest 10% to over $238,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire training managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring training managers in Virginia right now include Healthcare Services, Journeys, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors, large hospital networks, and financial services firms in the Northern Virginia and Richmond corridors means demand for training managers remains consistent throughout the year.
Which Virginia cities have the most training manager jobs?
Richmond, Charlottesville, and Virginia Beach have the most training manager openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia leads because of the dense concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors headquartered there, while Richmond's mix of financial institutions, healthcare systems, and state government agencies drives steady hiring, and Hampton Roads draws openings tied to military installations and their civilian workforce training requirements.
Are there remote training manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of training manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the role's strong fit with digital delivery tools and LMS-based program management. Curriculum design, e-learning development, and compliance program oversight are the functions most commonly offered remotely, while new-hire onboarding and hands-on skills training are more likely to require an on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a training manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a training coordinator or instructional designer role first, then building toward management. Large Virginia employers such as Inova Health System, Leidos, and state government agencies regularly hire training coordinators and learning specialists where direct management experience is not required. Completing a CPTD certificate program or building a portfolio of course materials strengthens early applications. Adjacent roles in HR generalist, onboarding specialist, or subject-matter-expert positions within defense or healthcare firms are common launching points for Virginia candidates without formal training management experience.
Where can I find and apply to training manager jobs in Virginia?
