Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in Alabama?
Brasfield & Gorrie, headquartered in Birmingham, is one of the more active construction employers in the state with a history of H-1B filings. Larger national contractors operating in Alabama, including Turner Construction and Fluor, have also filed H-1B petitions for engineering roles on major projects. Sponsorship activity is concentrated among general contractors and engineering-heavy construction firms rather than smaller subcontractors.
Which cities in Alabama have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Huntsville leads due to its rapid growth tied to defense, aerospace, and infrastructure expansion, which drives demand for civil and structural engineers. Birmingham follows as the state's largest metro and home to several major contractors. Mobile is active in port-related and industrial construction, particularly with ongoing manufacturing facility development along the Gulf Coast.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Alabama?
H-1B sponsorship in construction is limited to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Civil engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, construction project managers with engineering degrees, and BIM specialists are the most common sponsored positions. General labor, site superintendent roles, and positions where any degree satisfies the requirement generally do not qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship type, so you can search for H-1B construction roles in Alabama without sifting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Focus your search on civil engineering, structural engineering, and project management titles in Huntsville and Birmingham, where sponsorship activity is highest. Migrate Mate's listings are updated regularly and tagged by industry, making construction roles straightforward to isolate.
Are there any Alabama-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in construction?
Alabama's construction sector is influenced heavily by federal and defense spending, particularly around Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal corridor, which drives demand for engineering talent that employers sometimes sponsor. The state does not impose additional licensing barriers beyond standard federal H-1B requirements, but civil and structural engineers working on public projects will generally need to meet Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors requirements, which can affect job timelines for newly arrived H-1B holders.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
