Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in California?
Large engineering and construction firms with a California presence are the most consistent H-1B visa sponsors in this industry. Companies such as Bechtel, Jacobs Engineering, AECOM, Turner Construction, and Skanska have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications in California. Sponsorship is concentrated in firms large enough to have dedicated HR and legal resources, as the process requires significant administrative investment.
Which cities in California have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego generate the highest volume of construction H-1B roles in California. The Bay Area draws demand from infrastructure and transit projects, while Los Angeles benefits from commercial real estate development and public works. San Diego's military and biotech construction sectors also produce recurring openings. Sacramento sees activity tied to state government infrastructure programs.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in construction is almost exclusively limited to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Civil engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, MEP engineers, and construction project managers with engineering degrees are the roles most commonly approved. General site supervision, estimating, and trades positions typically do not meet the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B classification.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters construction roles in California by H-1B sponsorship willingness, saving you from sifting through listings that won't consider visa applicants. You can search by job title, city, and visa type to surface relevant openings from firms actively hiring internationally. Using a targeted platform like Migrate Mate significantly reduces time spent on applications that are unlikely to move forward.
Are there California-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in construction?
California's prevailing wage requirements interact with the H-1B's Department of Labor wage obligations, meaning employers must meet both state and federal prevailing wage standards for the role's location and classification. California also has active public works projects subject to state prevailing wage law, which can affect how employers structure H-1B filings for those roles. Candidates should confirm that a prospective employer is familiar with California-specific wage compliance alongside federal H-1B requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
