Tips for Finding H-1B Sponsorship Jobs in California
Focus on the Bay Area and Silicon Valley first
The San Francisco Bay Area accounts for a disproportionate share of California's H-1B filings. Companies like Apple, Google, Meta, and thousands of startups in this corridor file more petitions than most states combined. Prioritize this region in your search.
Use DOL disclosure data to identify active sponsors
The Department of Labor publishes LCA disclosure data quarterly. Search by California employer to see which companies filed H-1B petitions recently, how many, and for what job titles. This tells you who's actively sponsoring before you apply.
Look beyond tech into life sciences and biotech
San Diego, South San Francisco, and Los Angeles have dense concentrations of biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies that sponsor H-1B visas heavily. Roles in research, clinical development, and regulatory affairs qualify regularly.
Target mid-size companies, not just FAANG
Large tech firms get the attention, but California has thousands of Series B and C startups that sponsor H-1B visas with less competition for each role. Migrate Mate filters sponsorship jobs by company size so you can find these opportunities efficiently.
Understand California's prevailing wage environment
California's prevailing wages under DOL methodology are among the highest in the country. Employers filing LCAs here must offer salaries that reflect local market rates, which affects which employers can realistically sponsor and which roles they'll petition for.
Search by job title, not just employer name
California H-1B sponsorship spans hundreds of specialty occupation titles beyond software engineer. On Migrate Mate, you can search roles like financial analyst, mechanical engineer, or data scientist filtered to California to surface employers actively hiring in your field.

Which industries in California sponsor the most H-1B visas?
Technology is by far the largest H-1B visa sponsoring industry in California, driven by software companies, cloud platforms, and semiconductor firms concentrated in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. Life sciences and biotechnology rank second, particularly in San Diego and South San Francisco. Financial services, consulting, and engineering firms also file significant volumes of petitions statewide.
Which cities in California have the most H-1B sponsorship jobs?
San Jose and the broader Silicon Valley corridor lead the state in H-1B petition volume, followed closely by San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area cities like Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Santa Clara. Los Angeles is the second major hub, with significant activity in tech, entertainment technology, and healthcare. San Diego rounds out the top three, driven largely by biotech and defense.
What types of roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in California?
Roles that qualify require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field as a minimum entry requirement. In California, commonly sponsored positions include software engineers, data scientists, hardware engineers, biomedical researchers, financial analysts, civil and mechanical engineers, and management consultants. The degree must be specific to the role, so general business degrees typically don't support petitions for specialized technical positions.
How do I find H-1B sponsorship jobs in California?
Start by searching Migrate Mate, which curates H-1B sponsorship jobs in California and lets you filter by industry, city, and job title so you're only seeing roles where employers have a documented history of sponsoring. You can also cross-reference DOL LCA disclosure data to verify which California employers filed petitions recently before investing time in an application.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
