ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Golf oversees all golf operations and services offered, including the golf shop, golf range, golf services areas and golf car operation, including supervision of the Head Golf Professional. The position will promote an exceptional "golf experience," and provide excellent services and programs ensuring the highest level of services to Members and Guests.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Sports Management or related field or equivalent experience.
- Thorough knowledge of general business administration practices and knowledge of the game of golf, rules of golf, golf facility operations and tournament operations as would be acquired through five to eight years of similar golf experience in progressively responsible positions.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Must be a PGA Member in good standing in an active classification.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Oversee the management and performance of all golf shop and applicable department operations and services; assure high standards and total customer satisfaction.
- Establish golf shop operations policies and ensure proper hiring, training, supervising, personal development and corrective action in accordance with fair labor standards, safety and established policy.
- Oversee the development of operating procedures and training manuals for the golf operation.
- Oversee and manage the Head Golf Professional(s) and all golf department staff.
- Schedules and chairs regular staff meetings focused on customers, operations, revenue growth, cost containment and continuous improvement.
- Attends as invited committee/staff/public meetings representing the facility.
- Develop/coordinate the development of annual business plans for the golf operation.
- Coordinate and ensure all written correspondence, reporting, newsletters, and communications for the golf operation.
- Meet, greet, and welcome prospective customers/patrons.
- Enforce all rules and regulations governing golf course usage.
- Develop and oversee an innovative tournament schedule and golf activities program that services all customer segments.
- Develop and oversee golf instruction, clinics, golf schools, and player development programs for all customer segments.
- Develop and oversee a profitable merchandise concession that is consistent with customer/patron demographics and needs.
- Oversee golf marketing initiatives including all promotional materials, play recruitment, yield management, golf packages, and outside events plus the promotion of new golf memberships (where applicable).
- Oversee all fiscal areas and performance for the golf operations including planning, budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, and correction.
- Establish sales goals and forecasts for all golf programs and services; generate, monitor and analyze reports.
- Maintain a close working relationship with the Golf Course Superintendent and other department heads.
- Play golf with customers/patrons of all skill levels as time and duties permit.
- Oversee and enforce golf shop operations policies, procedures, controls, and fee structures to ensure the safekeeping of assets, inventory and resources.
- Foster environment for problem resolution to facilitate faster improvements to result in improved working relationships and Member/Guest satisfaction.
- Establish and maintain responsibility for the cleanliness and appearance of the Golf Shop, storage areas, and merchandise displays.
- Plan for and schedule manpower to include assistant professionals, sales staff, shop coordinator, locker room staff and outside operations staff. Establish equipment and supply requirements for the department and maintain accountability for cost, utilization and performance of employees and equipment.
- Establish and maintain the daily "pace of play standard."
- Maintain a high profile with PGA TOUR players, TPC Members and Guests. Positively promote the service philosophy of the club and PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties, Inc.
- Consult with PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties, Inc. on merchandise purchases and maintain acceptable inventory levels ensuring profitability through inventory turnover and cost of sales control guidelines.
- Maintain ordering, receiving, and storage programs as established by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties. Administer physical inventories as prescribed by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties, Inc. Maintain proper shrink controls.
- Establish and administer the club tournament program. Assist in the development of promotional materials to communicate the programs to the Members and Guests.
- Direct outside golf operations, ensuring that the outside golf supervisor properly controls Membership and Guest services. Set-up and maintenance of practice facility, course advisors, golf car maintenance, golf bag storage, and golf club repair activities.
- Ensure that the locker room staff provides the highest level of service and cleanliness standards. Maintain adequate supplies (towels and other bathing amenities) at par levels and available as necessary.
- Develop the annual golf shop operating budget and manage line items in accordance with that budget while controlling general expenses for the entire golf operation.
- Direct the Instructional Golf teaching programs as established by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties.
- Project a positive favorable image for the club, PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties, Inc. and the PGA TOUR with the press, PGA TOUR players, tournament committees, prospective Members, Guests, Members and representatives from merchandise manufacturers.
- Assist in the planning and execution of outings and tournaments. Coordinate purchases of high-quality gifts and awards with PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties.
- Verify the accuracy of prices for state and federal taxes and other charges on all sales tickets and accurately operate the point-of-sale system as outlined in the Club Operations Manual.
- Ensure that all sub-departments of the Golf Operation are responsibly managed and supervised and that established service standards are maintained.
- Hire and train all golf operations employees (final approval from General Manager required) utilizing standard company procedures. Conduct and complete annual and semi-annual employee performance reviews and develop employee self-improvement programs and recommend changes in salary.
- Professionally communicate information, sell merchandise, and become fully knowledgeable in all products and sales techniques. Anticipate the needs of Members and Guests and offer appropriate merchandise or alternatives.
- Maintain control of employee uniforms, ensuring that uniforms and nametags are worn and kept in proper condition and readily available at all times to employees.
- Answer telephones clearly and concisely, to schedule future starting time reservations and communicate information in a pleasant and professional manner.
- Ensure monthly merchandise report from the month end reports is accurately prepared and forward to Headquarters Merchandising Department for review.
- Special projects or other duties as assigned.
