Which legal companies sponsor H-1B visas in Illinois?
Several large law firms headquartered in Chicago have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for legal roles, including Kirkland & Ellis, Sidley Austin, Mayer Brown, and Winston & Strawn. Large corporations with substantial Illinois in-house legal departments, such as Boeing, Walgreens Boots Alliance, and United Airlines, also appear in DOL disclosure data as H-1B sponsors for attorney and legal counsel positions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most legal H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of legal H-1B sponsorship activity in Illinois. The Loop and surrounding downtown neighborhoods host the highest density of major law firms and corporate legal departments. Outside Chicago, opportunities are limited, though Downers Grove and Naperville have some corporate legal presence. For most international attorneys pursuing H-1B sponsorship, Chicago is the practical target.
What types of legal roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Roles that require a Juris Doctor or a specialized legal master's degree as a minimum entry requirement are the strongest candidates for H-1B specialty occupation classification. This typically includes associate attorney positions at law firms, in-house counsel roles, compliance attorneys, and legal analysts requiring a law degree. Paralegal and legal assistant roles generally do not qualify because they do not require a specific bachelor's-level or higher degree in a directly related field.
How do I find legal H-1B sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking H-1B sponsorship, and you can filter directly for legal roles in Illinois. This surfaces employers with documented H-1B sponsorship histories in the legal sector, saving significant research time. Beyond the job board, reviewing DOL OFLC disclosure data for Illinois-based LCA filings under legal job titles can help you identify which specific firms and companies have sponsored in the past.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in legal roles?
Illinois does not impose state-level restrictions on H-1B employment, but legal roles carry an additional layer of complexity: practicing law in Illinois requires admission to the Illinois State Bar. H-1B status authorizes work for the petitioning employer but does not itself grant bar admission. Foreign-trained attorneys should verify their eligibility to sit for the Illinois bar exam through the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar before targeting roles that require state licensure.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B legal jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
