Which aerospace and defense companies sponsor H-1B visas in Illinois?
Several large aerospace and defense employers in Illinois have consistent H-1B sponsorship histories, including Boeing, which maintains significant operations in the Chicago area, as well as Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Technologies, and Northrop Grumman. United Airlines and aviation services firms around O'Hare also file H-1B petitions regularly for engineering and technical roles. Sponsorship patterns vary by year and role, so checking DOL LCA disclosure data gives the most current picture.
Which cities in Illinois have the most aerospace and defense H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The Chicago metropolitan area, including suburbs like Naperville, Schaumburg, and Rolling Meadows, concentrates the majority of Illinois aerospace and defense H-1B roles. Rockford has a notable manufacturing and aerospace cluster, with companies supporting both commercial aviation and defense contracts. East Alton and Decatur also have defense-related manufacturing presence. Most corporate and engineering headquarters positions, however, are concentrated in the greater Chicago region.
What types of aerospace and defense roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Illinois?
Roles that routinely qualify include aerospace engineers, systems engineers, avionics engineers, software engineers working on defense platforms, structural analysts, propulsion engineers, and mechanical engineers with specializations tied to a specific degree field. The H-1B requires the position to be a specialty occupation, meaning a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field is the normal minimum requirement. General technician or production roles without a degree requirement typically do not qualify.
How do I find aerospace and defense H-1B sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by visa type, industry, and state to surface aerospace and defense roles in Illinois where employers have indicated H-1B sponsorship. Because many aerospace employers file H-1B petitions consistently, cross-referencing active job listings with DOL LCA disclosure data helps confirm sponsorship history before applying. Migrate Mate aggregates this in one place, saving significant research time for international candidates.
Are there state-specific or industry-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in aerospace and defense in Illinois?
Illinois does not impose state-level visa requirements beyond federal H-1B rules, but aerospace and defense roles often carry federal security clearance requirements. H-1B holders can be sponsored for security clearances, though the process is complex and not all employers initiate it for visa holders. Illinois-based defense contractors working on sensitive programs may restrict certain roles to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, which is worth confirming with each employer before applying.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B aerospace & defense jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
