INTRODUCTION
We are seeking a detail‑oriented Histology professional to join our clinical laboratory team. This position offers a stable second‑shift schedule (1:30 PM – 11:00 PM) with no weekends or holidays, a supportive and collaborative work environment, and career ladder opportunities for professional growth and advancement. The primary purpose of this role is to process and prepare a variety of tissue samples using established histology techniques in support of diagnostic, clinical, and academic missions.
This position is eligible for up to a $15,000 sign-on bonus depending on experience level.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping.
- Embed and cut specialized tissue based on anatomical location, including adherence to minute biopsy protocols.
- Perform quality control (QC) checks at each phase of tissue processing and staining.
- Ensure all tissues are embedded and cut according to department‑specific protocols, maintaining proper orientation and producing complete sections free of folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.
- Accurately prepare slides for microtomy using barcode labeling to ensure correct patient identification throughout the workflow.
- Demonstrate progressive skill development toward working independently in advanced staining areas.
- Maintain laboratory instruments in accordance with quality control standards and daily maintenance protocols.
- Support the academic mission of the department as required.
- Perform ancillary and miscellaneous duties, including filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and effective use of CoPath as it relates to the histology workflow.
- Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures, and work practices.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Above‑average computer skills, including the ability to efficiently use laboratory information systems, barcode technology, and digital workflow tools.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized protocols in a regulated clinical environment.
