Which government employers in Virginia sponsor H-1B visas?
Virginia's government and public sector H-1B visa sponsors include large federal contractors and defense-focused organizations such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, General Dynamics Information Technology, and Perspecta. These firms hold government contracts requiring specialized technical talent and regularly file Labor Condition Applications through DOL to bring in H-1B workers for roles supporting federal agencies.
Which cities in Virginia have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
The Northern Virginia corridor produces the highest concentration of government H-1B sponsorship jobs in the state. Arlington, McLean, Reston, Fairfax, and Herndon are home to the headquarters and major offices of federal contractors serving the Department of Defense, intelligence community, and civilian agencies. Richmond and Charlottesville also see public sector H-1B activity, though at lower volumes than Northern Virginia.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for verified H-1B sponsors in Virginia's government and public sector, using DOL Labor Condition Application filing data to surface employers with active sponsorship history. You can narrow results by location, role type, and agency focus to identify federal contractors and public sector organizations that have filed H-1B petitions for positions matching your qualifications.
What types of government roles in Virginia typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Roles that meet the H-1B specialty occupation standard are most common in IT systems administration, cybersecurity analysis, software engineering, data science, program management with a technical degree requirement, and intelligence analysis. Contractors supporting the Department of Defense, DHS, and civilian federal agencies regularly sponsor these positions. Roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field are the baseline for qualification.
Are there state-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in Virginia's government sector?
Many Virginia government sector H-1B positions require or eventually require a security clearance, which is a separate process from the visa itself. H-1B status permits employment while a clearance investigation is pending, but employers vary in how they handle clearance-ineligible candidates. Federal contractors in Virginia also frequently use E-Verify for employment authorization, which is standard practice for organizations holding government contracts.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
