Which government employers in Colorado sponsor H-1B visas?
Federal agencies with a significant presence in Colorado, including the Department of Defense, U.S. Geological Survey, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), have a history of filing H-1B petitions. Colorado state agencies and public universities such as the University of Colorado system also sponsor H-1B workers, particularly for research, engineering, and technology roles.
Which cities in Colorado have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Denver concentrates the largest share of government H-1B jobs in Colorado, driven by its density of federal offices, state agencies, and public contractors. Colorado Springs is a secondary hub, anchored by military installations and defense-related agencies. Boulder is particularly active for scientific and research roles, given the presence of NIST and NREL, both of which regularly sponsor H-1B workers.
What types of government roles in Colorado typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship in Colorado's government sector is most common for specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Roles that regularly qualify include software engineers, data scientists, civil and environmental engineers, physical scientists, policy analysts with specialized academic backgrounds, and IT security professionals. General administrative or clerical positions rarely meet the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B approval.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in Colorado?
Migrate Mate aggregates H-1B sponsoring employers and filters by industry and state, making it straightforward to browse government roles in Colorado specifically. You can search by visa type and narrow results to public sector positions across Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, and other Colorado locations. Using a platform focused on sponsorship-verified employers saves significant time compared to reviewing unfiltered job listings.
Are there any state-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in Colorado's government sector?
Federal government positions are generally filled through USAJobs, and many require security clearances that can complicate or delay H-1B sponsorship for foreign nationals. State and local government agencies in Colorado operate under separate hiring rules and sponsor H-1B workers less frequently than federal agencies or public research institutions. Applicants should confirm sponsorship availability directly with the hiring agency before applying, since clearance requirements vary significantly by role.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in Colorado?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
