Which government employers in Oregon sponsor H-1B visas?
Federal agencies with a significant presence in Oregon, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, and various Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, have filed H-1B visa petitions. Oregon Health & Science University and Oregon State University are among the most active public-sector H-1B sponsors in the state, particularly for research, clinical, and technical positions.
Which cities in Oregon have the most government H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Portland accounts for the largest share of government H-1B jobs in Oregon, driven by its federal agency offices, VA Portland Health Care System, and OHSU. Salem, as the state capital, concentrates state government roles. Corvallis and Eugene follow, anchored by Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, both of which regularly sponsor H-1B workers for research and academic positions.
What types of government roles in Oregon typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Roles that qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Oregon's public sector generally fall into specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Common examples include biomedical researchers, environmental scientists, civil and structural engineers, IT systems analysts, public health specialists, and university faculty. Administrative generalist roles, where no specific degree field is required, typically do not meet the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find government H-1B sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by visa type (H-1B), state (Oregon), and industry (Government and Public Sector) to see active sponsorship-eligible roles from agencies, universities, and public institutions across the state. Because government H-1B sponsors in Oregon tend to be a defined set of recurring employers, Migrate Mate helps you focus on organizations with a documented history of sponsoring rather than applying broadly.
Are there any state-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in Oregon's government sector?
Oregon's public universities are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery. This is a meaningful distinction for candidates who missed the cap season or were not selected. Federal agencies also operate outside the cap. State and county government offices, however, are generally cap-subject unless they qualify under a nonprofit or higher-education exemption, so the sponsoring entity's classification matters.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B government jobs in Oregon?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
