Which construction companies sponsor H-1B visas in Virginia?
Large general contractors and engineering firms with a significant Virginia presence are the most active H-1B visa sponsors in construction. Companies like Skanska USA, Turner Construction, Clark Construction, Jacobs Engineering, and AECOM have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for Virginia-based roles. Smaller specialty subcontractors rarely sponsor H-1B workers due to the administrative and legal costs involved in the petition process.
Which cities in Virginia have the most construction H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly the Tysons Corner, Reston, and Dulles corridor, generates the highest concentration of construction H-1B roles driven by commercial development and data center construction. Arlington and Alexandria see steady demand tied to federal government projects. Richmond and Hampton Roads also produce sponsorship opportunities, especially for civil and infrastructure engineering roles connected to port expansion and transit projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Virginia?
H-1B sponsorship in construction is generally limited to specialty occupation roles that require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Positions that commonly qualify include structural engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, project engineers, construction project managers with engineering degrees, BIM specialists, and cost estimators with relevant technical credentials. General laborers, site supervisors, and trades roles do not meet the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find construction H-1B sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters construction roles by H-1B sponsorship availability and state, making it straightforward to browse verified Virginia opportunities without sifting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. You can search by role type within construction and real estate to surface engineering, project management, and BIM positions at firms with a documented history of H-1B filings in Virginia.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in construction?
Virginia's volume of federally funded infrastructure and defense-adjacent construction projects means many worksites require security clearances or citizenship, which can limit H-1B eligibility for certain roles. Northern Virginia's data center construction sector is a notable exception, with strong private-sector demand for engineers who are H-1B eligible. Workers placed at multiple Virginia project sites may also require amended H-1B petitions if work locations change significantly.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B construction jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
