Which science and research companies sponsor E-3 visas in Washington DC?
Federal contractors, think tanks, and research universities are among the most active E-3 sponsors in Washington DC. Organizations such as Booz Allen Hamilton, RAND Corporation, the Brookings Institution, Georgetown University, and George Washington University have filed Labor Condition Applications for research-oriented roles. Federal agencies like the National Institutes of Health also employ Australian researchers, though direct federal employment eligibility varies by role and citizenship requirements.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for E-3 sponsorship?
Roles that require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field qualify as specialty occupations under E-3 rules. In Washington DC, qualifying science and research positions commonly include research scientists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, policy researchers, data scientists with a research focus, environmental scientists, and clinical research coordinators. Positions described as requiring general analytical skills without a field-specific degree are less likely to meet the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find science & research E-3 sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate lists science and research positions in Washington DC that are filtered for employers with active E-3 Labor Condition Application filing history, so you can identify which organizations have sponsored Australian workers in comparable roles. Searching by industry and location on Migrate Mate reduces time spent on employers unlikely to sponsor, letting you focus applications on institutions with a demonstrated sponsorship record in research and scientific fields.
Which areas in Washington DC have the most science and research E-3 sponsorship jobs?
Most science and research E-3 opportunities in Washington DC are concentrated in Northwest DC near federal agency headquarters, the Capitol Hill corridor where policy research organizations cluster, and the Georgetown and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods anchored by major research universities. The broader metro area extends sponsorship activity into Bethesda and Rockville in Maryland, where the NIH campus and biotech firms operate, though those roles fall outside DC proper.
Are there DC-specific considerations for E-3 sponsorship in science and research?
Washington DC has a high concentration of federally funded research roles, and some positions at government agencies require U.S. citizenship, which disqualifies E-3 applicants regardless of qualifications. Contract research roles at private firms supporting federal programs are often open to E-3 holders. Because many DC research employers are nonprofits or universities, they may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B visa status but still file E-3 Labor Condition Applications for Australian nationals through the standard DOL process.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 science & research jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
