Planner Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Visa sponsorship for planners, including urban, transportation, and financial planners, depends heavily on the specialization. Urban and regional planners with a master's degree have a reasonable shot at H-1B visa sponsorship through government agencies and large consulting firms. Financial planners face more scrutiny since USCIS may question whether the role requires a specific bachelor's degree. Whichever planning field you're in, make sure the job description clearly ties to your degree to avoid H-1B petition issues. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

Pursue AICP certification for urban planning roles
The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) credential is the professional standard for urban and regional planners in the U.S. Earning AICP certification demonstrates that you meet professional practice standards, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument. You can sit for the exam after accumulating the required education and experience hours.
Earn APICS certifications for supply chain planning roles
The CPIM (Certified in Planning and Inventory Management) and CSCP from APICS are the most recognized certifications for supply chain planners. These credentials establish demand planning, production scheduling, and inventory optimization as specialized professional disciplines. Having these certifications before your H-1B filing adds tangible evidence to the petition.
Develop expertise in planning software platforms
Urban planners benefit from GIS proficiency (ArcGIS, QGIS) and 3D modeling tools like SketchUp or CityEngine. Supply chain planners should master ERP planning modules in SAP APO, Oracle SCM Cloud, or Kinaxis RapidResponse. Demonstrating technical platform expertise strengthens the argument that your role requires specialized training.
Target private planning and engineering firms
Multi-disciplinary firms like AECOM, WSP, Stantec, and Kimley-Horn hire urban planners and have immigration infrastructure in place. These firms work on public-sector contracts without the citizenship restrictions that direct government employment often carries. Their project diversity - transportation, land use, environmental, and community planning - also provides varied career development opportunities.
Specialize in a high-demand planning niche
Areas like transportation planning, environmental and sustainability planning, housing policy, and disaster resilience are all facing talent shortages. Supply chain planners who specialize in demand forecasting or S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) processes are also in strong demand. Niche expertise gives employers a concrete reason to sponsor when generalist planners are available locally.

Find Planner JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What types of planner roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Several planner specializations can qualify for H-1B sponsorship. Urban and regional planners (requiring a master's in urban planning from a PAB-accredited program), supply chain planners (requiring degrees in supply chain or industrial engineering), and production planners (requiring degrees in manufacturing or operations management) all meet the specialty occupation threshold. The key is that the role must require a specific degree directly related to the planning discipline.
Can urban planners use the TN visa?
Urban planning is not explicitly listed as a standalone TN visa profession under USMCA, but Canadian and Mexican citizens with degrees in geography, architecture, or engineering may qualify under related professional categories. The TN visa requires that the applicant's degree match a profession on the USMCA list. Consult an immigration attorney to determine if your specific qualifications align with a listed profession.
Is supply chain planning eligible for STEM OPT?
Supply chain planning programs may qualify for STEM OPT if classified under a STEM-eligible CIP code such as operations research (27.0301), industrial engineering (14.3501), or management science (52.1301). Not all supply chain or business programs carry STEM-eligible codes, so verify your program's CIP classification with your university. If eligible, you can receive up to 36 months of post-graduation work authorization.
Do government planning agencies hire visa-holding urban planners?
Some city and county planning departments do hire non-citizens, but many municipal government positions require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Private planning and design firms like AECOM, WSP, and Stantec are often better targets for visa holders because they have experience with immigration processes. Regional planning organizations and nonprofit housing agencies may also be open to sponsoring qualified planners.
How to find Planner jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Planner jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on large consulting firms, government agencies, construction companies, and multinational corporations that frequently hire planners. These employers often provide H-1B, TN, or other work visas for urban planners, project planners, and strategic planning professionals with relevant qualifications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Planner jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a planner in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
