Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Psychologist Jobs
Highlight your specialized psychology degree
Emphasize your master's or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, or clinical psychology. The specialty occupation requirement is stronger when your education directly matches the role's clinical or research focus.
Target research institutions and healthcare systems
Universities, medical centers, and large hospital systems frequently sponsor psychologists. These employers understand the specialty occupation requirements and have established visa sponsorship processes for mental health professionals.
Address state licensing in your application
Explain your plan to obtain state licensing or mention existing credentials. Employers worry about licensing delays, so demonstrating familiarity with the process reduces their perceived risk and liability.
Emphasize clinical specializations
Neuropsychology, forensic psychology, and pediatric psychology roles have stronger H-1B cases. Specialized areas demonstrate the advanced knowledge requirement better than general counseling or therapy positions that might not qualify.
Consider research-focused positions first
Academic and research psychology roles typically have clearer specialty occupation justification. Clinical research coordinator or psychology researcher positions often lead to easier H-1B approvals than direct patient care roles.
Document your clinical training thoroughly
Internships, residencies, and supervised clinical hours strengthen your H-1B petition. These demonstrate the specialized training that distinguishes psychology from general counseling roles that might not qualify for sponsorship.

Find Psychologist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do all psychology positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
No, only specialized psychology roles qualify. Positions requiring a specific psychology degree and advanced clinical or research skills typically qualify. General counseling or therapy roles that accept any bachelor's degree often don't meet the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B petitions.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a psychologist?
You need at least a master's degree in psychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or a closely related field. Some positions require a doctoral degree, particularly for independent practice or specialized clinical work. The degree must relate directly to the job duties.
Can I work as a psychologist while my state license is pending?
This depends on state regulations and your visa status. Some states allow supervised practice while licensing is pending. Your employer must verify that you can legally work in the specific role during the licensing process, as immigration status doesn't override state licensing requirements.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor psychologists?
University medical centers, large hospital systems, research institutions, and federal agencies frequently sponsor psychologists. These employers understand the specialty occupation requirements and have experience with visa processes. Private practice groups rarely sponsor due to cost and complexity.
How do psychology licensing requirements affect H-1B approval?
State licensing requirements actually strengthen H-1B cases by demonstrating that psychology is a specialized profession requiring specific education and training. However, you must show you can obtain the required license or already hold equivalent credentials from your home country.
How to find Psychologist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Psychologist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsoring employers. Focus on healthcare systems, mental health clinics, hospitals, and government health departments that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, or employer-sponsored permanent residency visas. Private practice groups and telehealth companies also frequently offer sponsorship for qualified psychologists.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Psychologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
