Applications are submitted through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau. For non-CPA accounting roles, a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is typically sufficient to qualify for most Iowa employer positions.

Which companies hire accountants in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring accountants in Iowa include Marsh, Hy-Vee, and Transamerica, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's strong insurance and financial services sector, anchored in Des Moines, means firms in those industries are among the most consistent sources of accounting openings statewide.
Which Iowa cities have the most accountant jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque have the most accountant openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates because of its concentration of insurance headquarters, regional banks, and financial services firms, while Cedar Rapids draws accounting demand from manufacturing and food processing employers, and Davenport benefits from its position in the Quad Cities industrial corridor with significant corporate and public accounting activity.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 46% of accountant openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally desk-based and software-driven the work is. Tax preparation, financial reporting, and bookkeeping functions are the most frequently offered as fully remote positions, while audit and cost accounting roles tend to require at least some on-site presence.
How can I get hired as an accountant in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for staff accountant or accounting associate roles at Iowa's large insurance and financial services firms, which regularly recruit new graduates from programs at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and Drake University. Principal Financial Group and AEGON run structured new-graduate rotational programs in Des Moines. Earning your CPA exam eligibility while working, or starting as a bookkeeper or accounts payable clerk, are both common lateral moves that lead to full accounting roles within Iowa employers.
