Auditor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an auditor in New York?
To work as a licensed CPA in New York, you must meet the education requirements set by the New York State Board of Public Accountancy, pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, and complete the required supervised experience hours before applying for licensure. Candidates pursuing internal or governmental audit roles without CPA licensure typically enter through accounting degree programs and pursue credentials such as the CIA or CISA to advance.
How much do auditors make in New York?
Auditors in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire auditors in New York?
Employers hiring auditors in New York right now include M&T Bank, VNS Health, and Albany Medical Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of global financial institutions, Big Four accounting firms, and state government agencies makes it one of the broadest markets in the country for auditors across specialties.
Which New York cities have the most auditor jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Albany have the most auditor openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its dense concentration of investment banks, insurance carriers, and public accounting offices, while Albany generates consistent demand through state government audit functions and regulatory agencies, and Buffalo draws openings from regional financial institutions and manufacturing companies.
Are there remote auditor jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable professional roles, since audit work is largely analytical and document-driven. About 26% of auditor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the flexibility that financial and compliance audit functions can accommodate. IT audit and internal audit roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while external audit engagements that require on-site fieldwork are less commonly fully remote.
How can I get hired as an auditor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff auditor or audit associate position at one of the large public accounting firms in New York City, which run structured new-graduate recruiting programs each fall. Candidates who have completed a relevant internship, earned a degree in accounting or finance, and passed one or more CPA exam sections move to the front of those candidate pools. Government audit roles at the New York State Office of the State Comptroller or the New York City Comptroller's office also hire entry-level auditors and offer structured training.
