Behavioral Health Technician Jobs in South Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health technician in South Carolina?
Most behavioral health technician positions in South Carolina require a high school diploma or GED, CPR certification, and a clean background check processed through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. South Carolina does not issue a standalone state license for this role, but employers typically require completion of their own onboarding training aligned with guidelines from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. Candidates with an associate degree in human services or psychology are consistently preferred over those without any post-secondary coursework.
Which companies hire behavioral health technicians in South Carolina?
Companies currently hiring behavioral health technicians in South Carolina include Prisma Health, Tenet Healthcare, and National Youth Advocate Program, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. South Carolina's large integrated health systems and state-run psychiatric facilities tend to post the most consistent openings across Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston throughout the year.
Which South Carolina cities have the most behavioral health technician jobs?
Greenville, Rock Hill, and Spartanburg have the most behavioral health technician openings in South Carolina. Columbia leads because it is home to the South Carolina Department of Mental Health's headquarters and several state psychiatric hospitals, while Greenville and Charleston draw openings through their large hospital systems, growing outpatient networks, and residential treatment facilities serving their surrounding regions.
Are there remote behavioral health technician jobs in South Carolina?
Yes, but they're rare. About 25% of behavioral health technician openings tied to South Carolina are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how hands-on the role typically is. The portions of the work most likely to appear in a remote format involve telehealth monitoring support or documentation coordination, rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health technician in South Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to residential treatment centers and state-operated psychiatric facilities, which regularly hire candidates without prior behavioral health experience and provide structured on-the-job training. Prisma Health and the South Carolina Department of Mental Health both run onboarding programs that bring new hires up to their internal competency standards. Coming in as a mental health associate, psychiatric aide, or direct support professional is a common lateral step that opens the door. Earning a CPR certification and completing a basic human services or psychology course before applying gives candidates a visible edge.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health technician jobs in South Carolina?
