Benefits Consultant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a benefits consultant in Texas?
To work as a benefits consultant in Texas, you typically need a Group 1 insurance license issued by the Texas Department of Insurance, which covers life, accident, and health products and is required to advise on or sell employer-sponsored benefit plans. Candidates complete a pre-licensing course, pass the state exam, and apply through the TDI licensing portal. Most employers also expect a bachelor's degree and, over time, a professional designation such as the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist credential.
How much do benefits consultants make in Texas?
Benefits consultants in Texas earn a median of about $74,800 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,570 for the lowest 10% to over $121,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire benefits consultants in Texas?
Employers hiring benefits consultants in Texas right now include Mercer, Alvarez & Marsal, and Equitable Advisors, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major hospital systems, and energy companies creates consistent demand for consultants who specialize in complex group benefit arrangements.
Which Texas cities have the most benefits consultant jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most benefits consultant openings in Texas. Dallas-Fort Worth's density of corporate headquarters and insurance brokerage firms drives the highest volume, while Houston's energy and medical center employers sustain strong demand, and Austin's fast-growing tech and professional-services sector has added a steady stream of openings in recent years.
Are there remote benefits consultant jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many professional roles, because benefits consulting is largely desk-based, analytical work centered on plan design, compliance, and client communication rather than on-site tasks. About 61% of benefits consultant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have accepted distributed work for this function. Client-facing advisory and renewals work is most commonly offered in hybrid formats, while plan administration and compliance analysis roles tend to be the most fully remote.
How can I get hired as a benefits consultant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a benefits analyst or benefits coordinator role at a large Texas employer or regional insurance brokerage, where you support plan administration before moving into advisory work. Major Texas-based employers and hospital systems frequently post associate-level benefits roles that do not require prior consulting experience. Obtaining your Texas Group 1 insurance license before applying gives you a concrete credential advantage, and candidates coming from HR generalist, payroll, or open-enrollment coordination roles make a natural transition that hiring managers recognize.
Where can I find and apply to benefits consultant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to benefits consultant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
