Bookkeeper Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in Oregon?
Oregon does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so most employers hire based on education and demonstrated experience. The most common path is completing an associate degree in accounting at a community college such as Portland Community College or Lane Community College, then gaining hands-on experience through entry-level accounting roles. Earning a nationally recognized credential like the Certified Bookkeeper designation from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers strengthens candidacy and is well regarded by Oregon employers.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in Oregon?
Companies currently hiring bookkeepers in Oregon include NIKE, Intel Corporation, and Tyree, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Oregon's mix of large healthcare systems, regional retailers, and a growing technology sector means bookkeeping demand is spread across multiple industries rather than concentrated in one.
Which Oregon cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
The Oregon cities with the most bookkeeper openings are Portland, Salem, and Eugene. Portland dominates as the state's primary commercial hub, home to corporate headquarters, large nonprofits, and healthcare anchors that create consistent demand, while Eugene and Salem generate openings through their university systems, state government agencies, and regional business communities.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in Oregon?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 43% of bookkeeper openings tied to Oregon are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally the role fits cloud-based accounting tools. General ledger maintenance, accounts payable, and client bookkeeping for small businesses are the functions most consistently offered on a remote or hybrid basis by Oregon employers.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in Oregon with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an accounts payable or accounting clerk role, which Oregon employers in healthcare, construction, and property management regularly staff at the junior level without requiring prior bookkeeping experience. Completing an accounting certificate at Portland Community College or Chemeketa Community College and pairing it with a QuickBooks certification gives candidates a concrete edge. From an accounts payable or administrative assistant background, a lateral move into bookkeeping support is a common and well-established route at mid-size Oregon firms.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Oregon?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Oregon on Migrate Mate, which lists current Oregon openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, location preference, and schedule, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
