Clinical Registered Nurse Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical registered nurse in New York?
You become a clinical registered nurse in New York by completing an accredited nursing program, either an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, then passing the NCLEX-RN exam and applying for licensure through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York does not participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so an active New York State RN license is required before you can work clinically in the state.
How much do clinical registered nurses make in New York?
Clinical registered nurses in New York earn a median of about $109,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,760 for the lowest 10% to over $157,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical registered nurses in New York?
Employers hiring clinical registered nurses in New York right now include NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Trinity Health, and Columbia University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers drive a significant share of postings, with consistent openings across inpatient units, specialty departments, and outpatient clinics.
Which New York cities have the most clinical registered nurse jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Albany have the most clinical registered nurse openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume given the density of major academic medical centers and health system headquarters there, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady hiring through large regional hospital systems and state government health institutions serving upstate populations.
Are there remote clinical registered nurse jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Clinical registered nursing is a hands-on role that requires direct patient contact, so the vast majority of positions are on-site. About 4% of clinical registered nurse openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in telephonic triage, utilization review, and care management functions rather than direct bedside care.
How can I get hired as a clinical registered nurse in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new graduate nurse residency program, which large New York employers including Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, and NYC Health and Hospitals run specifically for nurses who have just passed the NCLEX-RN. These structured programs place new RNs into clinical rotations with mentorship before transitioning to a permanent unit. Applying to med-surg or telemetry roles is also a common first step, and holding a BSN and an active New York State RN license gives candidates a measurable edge in a competitive market.
Where can I find and apply to clinical registered nurse jobs in New York?
