Verify your medical credentials early
ECFMG certification is a non-negotiable requirement for international medical graduates before Fairview can initiate any visa petition. Start the certification process well in advance, as incomplete credentials are the most common reason physician sponsorships stall before an offer is extended.
Target Fairview's underserved clinic locations
Fairview operates community and rural health sites across Minnesota where physician demand is highest. Roles in these locations are filled more urgently, which means hiring teams are more motivated to move quickly through the sponsorship process with qualified international candidates.
Understand which visa pathway fits your situation
Fairview sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. TN is available immediately for Canadian and Mexican physicians; H-1B requires cap registration in March. Knowing which category applies to you before you apply prevents delays after an offer is made.
Align your specialty with Fairview's open service lines
Fairview's hiring activity concentrates in primary care, hospital medicine, and certain specialty areas. Researching their current Medical Doctor openings before applying lets you frame your specialty and clinical experience around documented organizational need, which directly supports the Labor Condition Application DOL requires for H-1B petitions.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Before signing, confirm in writing whether Fairview will cover USCIS filing fees, attorney costs, and Green Card sponsorship alongside the initial work visa. Physician contracts at large health systems often include these terms, but they're negotiated at the offer stage, not after.
Browse open Medical Doctor roles on Migrate Mate
Filtering by visa type and employer lets you confirm which Fairview roles are actively recruiting international physicians before you invest time in an application. Migrate Mate surfaces sponsorship-verified openings, so you're not guessing whether a listing supports your visa category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fairview Health Services sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, Fairview Health Services sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles. Because the H-1B is subject to the annual cap and lottery, your employer must submit a registration in March for a start date no earlier than October 1 of that year. Fairview's physician recruitment team typically coordinates with immigration counsel to manage this timeline, so raising sponsorship early in the hiring process is important.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Fairview Health Services?
Applications go through Fairview's careers portal, where Medical Doctor openings are listed by specialty and location. Before applying, review the role requirements carefully, since physician positions typically require board certification or eligibility, active or pending Minnesota licensure, and ECFMG certification for international medical graduates. Migrate Mate also aggregates Fairview's sponsorship-eligible Medical Doctor roles, so you can filter by visa type before you apply.
Which visa types does Fairview Health Services use for Medical Doctor sponsorship?
Fairview sponsors several visa categories for Medical Doctor roles, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican physicians qualifying under NAFTA/USMCA, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent medical graduates in training programs, and employment-based Green Card pathways under EB-2 and EB-3. The right pathway depends on your nationality, training status, and career timeline, so it's worth clarifying your situation before or during the offer conversation.
What qualifications does Fairview Health Services expect for Medical Doctor roles?
Fairview generally requires an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, completion of a U.S. residency program in the relevant specialty, and board certification or active board eligibility. International medical graduates must hold ECFMG certification. Active or pending Minnesota medical licensure is required before a start date. For subspecialty roles, fellowship training is commonly expected in addition to core residency.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining Fairview Health Services?
Timeline depends on the visa type. H-1B sponsorship follows a fixed annual cycle with a March registration window and October 1 start dates, making early-stage planning essential. TN sponsorship can move faster, sometimes within weeks for eligible Canadian and Mexican physicians. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically takes one to three years or longer depending on your country of birth and current USCIS processing volumes.
