Job Description
We are seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Federal Engineering and Design Team. You'll be part of a team, working on complex mechanical system designs for high-impact federal infrastructure projects. You will support the design of mechanical systems, primarily HVAC and plumbing, for infrastructure projects. These include VA hospitals, DoD facilities, offices, barracks, and other government buildings that serve veterans, military personnel, and federal agencies. You will also assist in preparing calculations, writing technical reports, and producing construction documents in Revit.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide small-scale mechanical design elements for federal engineering projects using fundamental knowledge, standard techniques, and established methods for small to mid-sized projects.
- Perform basic plan production and receive direction on assigned tasks, including drafting and detailing mechanical components for construction documents.
- Develop and apply knowledge and experience working within design/modeling software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, and discipline-specific mechanical tools) to support project deliverables.
- Assist with preparation of project documentation and schedules; perform design calculations within a limited scope and under guidance of senior engineers.
- Support mechanical system design and documentation for federal facilities, which may include HVAC and plumbing from concept through construction.
- Assist with load calculations and mechanical system sizing; support development of design narratives, basis-of-design documentation, and technical reporting as needed.
- Coordinate with experienced engineers and designers on non-routine techniques and procedures; collaborate with other disciplines (structural, civil, electrical) to support integrated design.
- Gather research, recommend solutions, and create drafts of technical reports using prescribed methods and internal standards.
- Mentor student interns by providing opportunities to develop foundational technical skills and knowledge; may supervise student staff as needed.
- May travel and work in various terrains and weather conditions at project sites in different stages of construction (site visits, observation, coordination, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of one year of engineering experience.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.
- Possesses Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification.
- Proficiency in Revit and HVAC design software.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to contribute and work well with a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to travel and work in field conditions as needed.
- Solid interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Why Join Us
- Contribute to projects that serve veterans, military personnel, and federal agencies.
- Choose from remote, hybrid, or in-office arrangements that support your lifestyle and productivity.
- Join a team that values mentorship, innovation, and shared success. We celebrate wins together and learn from challenges.
- Advance your career through leadership roles, technical training, and exposure to high-profile federal clients.
- Enjoy competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and a workplace culture that puts people first.

Align Your Degree to Specialty Occupation Standards
Mechanical Engineering roles at Olsson require a direct degree-to-role match to qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. A degree in a related field like civil or industrial engineering may face additional scrutiny, so document any technical overlap carefully before applying.
Target Olsson Offices in Infrastructure-Heavy Regions
Olsson staffs Mechanical Engineers across offices tied to active infrastructure projects. Applying to locations with pipeline-heavy workloads increases your odds of a time-sensitive hire, which can motivate employers to move faster on sponsorship paperwork before OPT or grace period deadlines.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Olsson Mechanical Engineer Openings
Olsson posts roles across multiple job boards inconsistently. Use Migrate Mate to filter verified Mechanical Engineer openings at Olsson by visa type, so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed rather than guessing from a generic job listing.
Clarify TN Eligibility Before Your Interview
If you're a Canadian or Mexican national, the TN visa category covers Mechanical Engineers explicitly under USMCA. Raise this in your initial recruiter conversation at Olsson rather than waiting for offer stage, since it sidesteps H-1B lottery risk entirely and simplifies the employer's filing process.
Prepare Your CPT or OPT Documentation Early
Consulting firms like Olsson often coordinate onboarding across multiple project sites, which can complicate F-1 employment authorization paperwork if your Designated School Official needs lead time. Request your OPT EAD or confirm CPT authorization at least 90 days before your intended start date.
Negotiate Offer Timing Around the H-1B Filing Window
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start. If Olsson extends you an offer outside that window, ask about starting on OPT or CPT to bridge the gap, then transitioning to H-1B status once USCIS approves your petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Olsson sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Olsson sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. As a consulting and professional services firm with engineering as a core function, Mechanical Engineering roles typically satisfy the specialty occupation requirement USCIS applies to H-1B petitions. Your degree field and job duties need to align closely, so be prepared to document that connection clearly in the petition.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Olsson?
You can apply directly through Olsson's careers page or use Migrate Mate to find and filter Mechanical Engineer openings at Olsson by visa sponsorship type. Migrate Mate is useful if you want to confirm which roles are open to sponsored candidates before you apply, saving you from pursuing listings where sponsorship isn't on the table.
Which visa types does Olsson commonly use for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Olsson sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals, since Mechanical Engineer is an explicitly listed USMCA profession. J-1 visa sponsorship is less common for engineering roles but has been used in certain training or exchange contexts.
What qualifications does Olsson expect for Mechanical Engineer positions?
Olsson typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. For consulting-focused roles, experience with infrastructure systems, HVAC, or mechanical design in a project delivery environment is valued. Licensure progress, such as passing the FE exam, can strengthen your profile, particularly for roles with direct client responsibility.
How do I time my application if my OPT is running out?
If your OPT expiration is approaching, apply to Olsson at least three to four months before your authorization ends. This gives time for offer negotiation, LCA filing with DOL, and H-1B petition preparation if you're cap-subject. If you have a STEM OPT extension, you have more runway, but coordinating your start date with the H-1B October 1 cap-subject window is still critical to avoid gaps.
