Align your credentials to Thermo Fisher's product lines
Thermo Fisher's Mechanical Engineer roles split across analytical instruments, bioprocessing equipment, and cleanroom manufacturing. Tailor your resume to whichever product area matches your experience, since hiring teams are division-specific and a generic application rarely travels far.
Confirm OPT STEM extension eligibility before applying
Mechanical Engineering is a STEM-designated field, so F-1 students can access a 24-month OPT extension after the initial 12 months. Confirm your program CIP code with your DSO before interviews, so you can communicate your full authorization window clearly to Thermo Fisher's talent acquisition team.
Expect H-1B filing to follow an internal approval process
Large employers like Thermo Fisher route H-1B sponsorship decisions through HR and legal, not hiring managers. Once you have an offer, ask specifically about the internal sponsorship approval timeline so you can plan around the USCIS lottery registration window in March.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Mechanical Engineer roles
Thermo Fisher posts Mechanical Engineer openings across dozens of U.S. sites simultaneously, making it difficult to find sponsorship-eligible roles manually. Use Migrate Mate to filter active positions by visa type so you're applying only where sponsorship is confirmed.
Prepare engineering documentation for PERM labor certification
If you're targeting a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM process requires your employer to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers were available. Gather your foreign degree equivalency documentation early, since DOL sometimes scrutinizes whether international engineering degrees meet the minimum requirements listed in the job posting.
Target roles tied to Thermo Fisher's manufacturing sites
Mechanical Engineer positions at Thermo Fisher's production facilities, such as those supporting mass spectrometry or ultra-low temperature equipment lines, tend to have longer-term staffing needs. Roles tied to sustained manufacturing programs are more likely to come with a clear pathway to ongoing sponsorship than project-based contract positions.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Thermo Fisher Scientific JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Thermo Fisher Scientific sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. The company has an established immigration program that handles petitions through its legal and HR teams. Sponsorship is tied to specific roles and divisions, so it's worth confirming sponsorship eligibility directly during the offer stage rather than assuming it applies universally across all postings.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Applications go through Thermo Fisher's careers portal at thermofisher.com/careers. Roles are posted by business unit and location, so searching by discipline and site separately surfaces more results. If you need visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate to browse verified sponsorship-eligible Mechanical Engineer openings at Thermo Fisher and apply directly from there.
Which visa types does Thermo Fisher Scientific commonly use for Mechanical Engineers?
Thermo Fisher sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation roles, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, and TN visas for qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals in engineering. For permanent residence, the company uses EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based Green Card categories depending on the role's degree requirements and the candidate's qualifications.
What qualifications does Thermo Fisher Scientific expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Most Mechanical Engineer postings at Thermo Fisher require a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Roles tied to analytical instruments or laboratory equipment often expect experience with CAD platforms like SolidWorks or Creo, tolerance analysis, and some familiarity with FDA-regulated or ISO-certified manufacturing environments. Senior roles typically require five or more years of relevant industry experience.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Mechanical Engineer offer at Thermo Fisher Scientific?
Timeline depends on the visa type. F-1 OPT authorization through USCIS should be initiated at least 90 days before your start date. H-1B sponsorship is subject to the annual lottery with a registration window each March and an October 1 start date. PERM-based Green Card filings through DOL can take 12 to 24 months before an I-140 petition is filed with USCIS.
