Document your equipment certifications before applying
United Rentals technicians work across heavy construction, aerial, and power equipment. Gather OEM certifications, diesel or hydraulic training records, and any OSHA credentials before you apply. These directly strengthen a specialty occupation argument for H-1B filing.
Target branches with active fleet expansion
United Rentals operates over 1,300 locations and expands fleet capacity in construction-heavy markets. Applying to branches in high-growth regions increases your odds of landing a role with immediate headcount needs, which accelerates internal approval to pursue sponsorship.
Clarify sponsorship intent during the offer stage
Raise visa sponsorship explicitly once a verbal offer is on the table, not during initial interviews. United Rentals routes sponsorship decisions through HR and legal, so knowing which visa type applies to your situation before that conversation prevents delays in the filing process.
Understand how TN status applies to technician roles
Canadian and Mexican nationals can pursue TN status for engineering technician classifications, but the role description must align with DOL-defined TN categories. Ask the hiring team whether the posted Service Technician position has been approved for TN classification previously.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Service Technician roles
Search and filter United Rentals' active Service Technician openings by visa type and location using Migrate Mate. This lets you identify which postings align with your sponsorship eligibility before investing time in a full application.
Align your OPT or CPT start date with onboarding timelines
United Rentals' technician onboarding includes equipment-specific training that can run several weeks. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your work authorization start date covers the full onboarding window, and track your 60-day unemployment limit carefully throughout the hiring process.

Find Service Technician at United Rentals JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does United Rentals sponsor H-1B visas for Service Technicians?
Yes, United Rentals has sponsored H-1B visas for Service Technician roles. The key requirement is that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria, which means the role must normally require a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a specific technical field. Roles involving advanced diagnostics, fleet systems, or specialized equipment are more likely to meet this threshold than general maintenance positions.
Which visa types are commonly used for Service Technician roles at United Rentals?
United Rentals has sponsored H-1B, EB-2, EB-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas for technician functions. For most international candidates, H-1B and EB-3 are the most common paths. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical classifications. F-1 OPT and CPT are practical entry points for recent graduates in engineering or related fields.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Service Technician roles at United Rentals?
Most Service Technician postings at United Rentals require hands-on experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, aerial work platforms, or heavy construction equipment. OEM certifications from manufacturers like JLG, Genie, or Caterpillar are frequently referenced in job listings. A degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial technology strengthens both your candidacy and any future H-1B specialty occupation argument.
How do I apply for Service Technician jobs at United Rentals?
You can browse and apply for open Service Technician positions at United Rentals through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type and location. When applying, tailor your resume to highlight equipment-specific certifications and technical systems experience. After submitting, expect an initial recruiter screen followed by a technical or branch-level interview focused on your hands-on diagnostic and repair background.
How do I plan my timeline around United Rentals' sponsorship and USCIS filing process?
If you're targeting an H-1B, the cap-subject lottery opens in March for an October 1 start date, so your offer and internal sponsorship approval need to be in place by late February. EB-3 labor certification through PERM with DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before USCIS petition filing. For OPT extensions or TN renewals, align your application submission at least 90 days before your current authorization expires.
