Align your credentials to KUMC's clinical departments
KUMC fills Clinical Assistant Professor roles across departments like internal medicine, pathology, and nursing. Tailor your CV to the specific department's clinical and teaching focus, and ensure your professional licenses are active or transferable to Kansas before applying.
Request LCA details before accepting an offer
Before signing, ask HR which Department of Labor wage level your role is classified under. The LCA sets your prevailing wage floor, and Clinical Assistant Professor positions at academic medical centers can vary widely depending on the department and clinical duties.
Confirm your J-1 waiver eligibility early
If you are currently on a J-1 visa with a two-year home residency requirement, you will need a waiver before KUMC can file an H-1B for you. Conrad 30 waivers through Kansas are an option for physicians in underserved areas, so verify your eligibility months ahead.
Use Migrate Mate to browse open Clinical Assistant Professor roles
KUMC regularly posts Clinical Assistant Professor positions across specialties. Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship type so you can identify current openings that match your clinical background and immigration situation before reaching out to the department.
Understand cap-exempt status at KUMC
As a higher education institution, KUMC qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. That means your H-1B petition can be filed at any time of year, bypassing the annual lottery that affects most private-sector employers.
Prepare documentation for PERM-based green card sponsorship
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, KUMC must complete PERM labor certification with the DOL, which requires demonstrating no qualified U.S. workers were available. Gather transcripts, licensure records, and prior employment letters early, as this process can take 12 to 24 months to complete.

Does University of Kansas Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Assistant Professors?
Yes, KUMC sponsors H-1B visas for Clinical Assistant Professors. Because KUMC is a higher education institution, it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning petitions can be filed year-round without competing in the annual H-1B lottery. The sponsorship process typically involves the employer filing Form I-129 after an offer is extended and the Labor Condition Application is certified by the DOL.
How do I apply for Clinical Assistant Professor jobs at University of Kansas Medical Center?
Applications go through KUMC's official careers portal, where roles are posted by department. You can also browse current Clinical Assistant Professor openings that offer visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by sponsorship type. Most applications require a CV, cover letter, teaching and research statements, and three professional references. Contacting the department chair directly can also strengthen your candidacy before a formal application.
Which visa types are commonly used for Clinical Assistant Professor roles at University of Kansas Medical Center?
KUMC sponsors several visa categories for Clinical Assistant Professor positions. H-1B is the most common for long-term employment. J-1 is frequently used for visiting faculty and physicians completing clinical training. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying specialty occupations. For permanent residency, KUMC has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM process for eligible faculty.
What qualifications are expected for Clinical Assistant Professor positions at KUMC?
Most Clinical Assistant Professor roles at KUMC require a terminal degree in the relevant field, such as an MD, PhD, DNP, or equivalent. Active or eligibility for Kansas state licensure is typically required for clinically practicing roles. Prior teaching experience, clinical training in a U.S. or internationally recognized program, and board certification in medicine-related specialties are often expected depending on the department.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Clinical Assistant Professor at KUMC?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS standard processing takes three to six months after the LCA is certified by the DOL, which itself takes seven to ten business days. Premium processing can reduce USCIS adjudication to 15 business days. If PERM labor certification is required for a Green Card, the full EB-2 or EB-3 process can span one to three years depending on your priority date and country of birth.
