Verify Your Credentials Meet Virginia Requirements
Before applying, confirm your nursing degree meets Virginia Board of Nursing licensure requirements. International nursing credentials often require a CGFNS evaluation or IELTS scores before UVA's HR team can advance your application through their credentialing process.
Target UVA Health System Roles Directly
UVA's clinical nursing openings are posted separately from its academic School of Nursing positions. Search both UVA Health and UVA HR portals, as sponsorship-eligible roles appear across different hiring pipelines depending on whether the position is patient-facing or research-affiliated.
Understand Which Visa Fits Your Nursing Role
UVA sponsors H-1B, E-3, and EB-2/EB-3 pathways for nursing. Registered nurse roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B if a BSN is required. Australian nurses should ask recruiters about E-3 eligibility early, as it's faster to process than H-1B.
Browse Open Nursing Roles Through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter UVA nursing openings by visa type. This lets you identify which active postings are realistically sponsorship-eligible before reaching out to recruiters, saving time on roles that don't match your authorization situation.
Prepare for PERM If Pursuing Permanent Residence
EB-3 sponsorship through UVA requires a PERM labor certification filed with the DOL before the immigrant petition stage. UVA must document recruitment efforts showing no qualified U.S. worker was available, so expect a multi-year process and plan your status accordingly.
Negotiate Sponsorship Terms Before Accepting an Offer
Confirm in writing whether UVA covers H-1B filing fees and attorney costs before you sign an offer. University employers sometimes split costs with employees, and USCIS rules prohibit certain fees from being passed to H-1B workers in specific circumstances.

Find Nursing at University of Virginia JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Virginia sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, University of Virginia sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles, particularly those requiring a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as a minimum credential. As a large academic medical institution, UVA qualifies as a cap-exempt employer in certain contexts, which can allow H-1B filings outside the standard annual lottery window. Confirm cap-exempt status with UVA's HR team during the offer stage.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at University of Virginia?
Applications are submitted through UVA's official careers portal, with separate pipelines for UVA Health clinical roles and UVA academic or research positions. You can also browse sponsorship-eligible nursing openings filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate before applying directly through UVA's system. Include your licensure status and work authorization situation in your application materials where prompted.
Which visa types does University of Virginia commonly use for Nursing roles?
UVA sponsors H-1B visas for registered nurses and advanced practice roles where a bachelor's degree in nursing is the industry standard requirement. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and processes faster than H-1B. For nurses seeking permanent residence, UVA has filed EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant petitions, with EB-3 being the most common pathway for RN-level positions.
What qualifications does University of Virginia expect for sponsored Nursing positions?
Most sponsorship-eligible nursing roles at UVA require at minimum a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and active Virginia RN licensure or eligibility. Advanced practice and research-focused positions may require a Master of Science in Nursing or DNP. Clinical experience in acute care or academic medical center environments is consistently prioritized in UVA Health postings, particularly for specialty units like oncology, cardiac care, and neurology.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Nursing role at University of Virginia?
Timeline depends heavily on visa type. E-3 processing for Australian nurses typically takes two to four weeks through consular processing. H-1B standard processing runs three to six months, with premium processing available through USCIS for faster adjudication. EB-3 green card sponsorship is a multi-year process involving DOL PERM labor certification, an I-140 petition, and priority date availability, which varies significantly by country of birth.
