Overview:
Princeton University seeks a highly motivated, well-qualified individual to serve as a Post-Approval Monitor (PAM) (Senior Compliance Administrator), Research Integrity and Assurance (RIA) supporting the Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). RIA fosters and supports the oversight of the responsible humane care and use of animals used in research and instruction at Princeton University. RIA is responsible for developing and implementing research compliance programs in the areas of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), IACUC, PAM, the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and Conflict of Interest (COI). This position presents a unique and challenging opportunity to support and advance the university’s world-class research enterprise by ensuring a successful Animal Care & Use Program.
Under the supervision of the RIA's Associate Director - IACUC/IBC/PAM, and in collaboration with other Sr. Compliance Administrators and units within Princeton University, the PAM-Senior Compliance Administrator ensures that every aspect of the ACUP, including research, can perform effectively and efficiently by identifying issues such as administrative and regulatory burden, developing and implementing training and educational programs, and ensuring the research community has a voice in the improvement of the animal research compliance program at Princeton University. The PAM-Senior Compliance Administrator will also participate in projects to support the program's improvement of efficiency and effectiveness.
The successful candidate will bring to the University a strong background in research administration, including broad and nuanced knowledge of compliance regulations, and have a proven track record supporting a robust research compliance program. The SCA will have outstanding interpersonal and management skills, a collaborative style, be customer service focused, and have a reputation for successfully working with faculty, staff, and students in achieving their research goals.
Responsibilities:
Provide Post-Approval Monitoring to research protocol programs:
- Conduct a variety of post-approval monitoring actions for activities involving animals and biological agents.
- Perform training and outreach (tailored to, and based upon departmental, laboratory, or individual needs) designed to educate the Princeton research community about regulations, policies and guidelines concerning animal care and use and biosafety.
- Coordinate and conduct meetings with researchers to ensure compliance with an approved animal protocol and an approved IBC registrations, discussing questions and concerns related to animal care and use and biosafety, and instilling a feeling of compliance confidence within the research community. Document findings and be prepared to give an exit debriefing of overall findings to the lab at the time of departure.
- Serve as an advocate for PIs regarding animal research and biosafety related concerns including policy changes, program suggestions, and reduction of burden.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of current processes and making recommendations for future process improvement.
Provide customer support and regulatory guidance, for example:
- Assist new PIs and other lab members with the regulatory landscape at Princeton University.
- Develop training and reference documents to facilitate compliance.
Provide assistance in support of:
1. Semiannual program evaluations of the IACUC
2. Lab inspections by EHS
3. Regulatory inspections by federal inspectors, site visitors, or auditors.
Special projects, as assigned, to support the programs improvement of efficiency and effectiveness.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- 5 years relevant experience
- Knowledge of the regulations governing (1) the care and use of animals in research, teaching, and testing and (2) research with recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules and other biological agents
- Experience with policies and guidelines related to research and use of animals and biological agents
- Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) (or obtained within a year)
- Lab animal experience
- Experience in research involving ABSL/BSL 2 and/or 3 activities
- Skilled in concise writing and excellent communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and balance many competing priorities
- Highly responsive and solution/action oriented
- Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships at all levels with proven ability to exhibit tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations
- Exercises sound judgment and discretion in matters of significance
- Innovative problem solving and troubleshooting skills with ability to make sound recommendations
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Evidence of successful experience in a customer service role
- Strong computing skills (Word, Excel, MSTeams, PowerPoint, etc).
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Familiarity with electronic protocol review/management systems
- Experience drafting policies/guidelines/SOPS
- Experience in presenting/public speaking
- Certified Laboratory Animal Technologist
