Construction Engineer Jobs in South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Manages and oversees engineering, technical, and administrative functions for all phases of assigned highway and bridge construction projects, including roadway construction and resurfacing, bridge construction, and building projects. Directs survey crews, inspection teams, and office personnel involved in project activities, including construction layout, material sampling and testing, and personnel selection and hiring. Applies comprehensive knowledge of construction project requirements to ensure inspections and surveys are performed accurately and efficiently by qualified personnel. Implements objectives established in the SCDOT Business Plan. Monitors fuel consumption, paper and printer usage, and the operating budget to reduce overall costs. Closes projects within 200 days of completion, maintains a quality management score average of 2.85, ensures projects are completed within budget, and provides professional customer service to clients. Maintains complete and accurate project records and ensures timely submission of required reports and final construction plans. Conducts periodic reviews of construction activities to ensure compliance with SCDOT plans, specifications, and standards. Coordinates with the District Utility Coordinator to manage and monitor the timely relocation of utilities for projects within the assigned area of responsibility. Communicates with internal and external stakeholders, including the public, local and state officials, contractors, and industry representatives, regarding project, construction, and technical matters. Participates in public hearings, conferences, and other meetings as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and five (5) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.

A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
