Cost Accountant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cost accountant in Virginia?
The standard path in Virginia begins with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, followed by pursuing either CPA licensure through the Virginia Board of Accountancy or the Certified Management Accountant credential through the Institute of Management Accountants. Virginia requires CPA candidates to complete education, pass the Uniform CPA Exam, and meet experience requirements before licensure. Many Virginia employers in defense contracting also expect familiarity with DCAA cost principles, which candidates can develop through entry-level roles or targeted coursework.
How much do cost accountants make in Virginia?
Cost accountants in Virginia earn a median of about $93,290 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,000 for the lowest 10% to over $156,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cost accountants in Virginia?
Employers hiring cost accountants in Virginia right now include Black Bear Talent, HII, and Arclin, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's high concentration of defense contractors and federal consulting firms means a significant share of openings require experience with government contract cost accounting and compliance frameworks.
Which Virginia cities have the most cost accountant jobs?
Richmond, Staunton, and Reston have the most cost accountant openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia anchors the market through its dense cluster of defense contractors and federal agencies, while Richmond draws demand from corporate headquarters and manufacturing operations, and Hampton Roads reflects the region's large military and shipbuilding employer base.
Are there remote cost accountant jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than many finance roles, since cost accounting is primarily analytical and system-based work that travels well to remote settings. About 25% of cost accountant openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting steady employer flexibility for experienced candidates. Standard costing, variance analysis, and financial close work are the functions most consistently offered on a hybrid or fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a cost accountant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a staff accountant or accounting analyst role with a Virginia employer and rotating into cost functions from there. Large defense contractors such as Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics run rotational finance programs that place new graduates across cost, pricing, and general accounting teams. Pursuing the CMA credential early signals intent and gives candidates an edge over those with only a degree. Community college accounting programs partnered with Richmond-area manufacturers also provide a direct bridge into entry-level cost roles.
Where can I find and apply to cost accountant jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to cost accountant jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings from employers actively hiring. Find a role that fits your experience and location preference and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
