Cybersecurity Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cybersecurity professional in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work in cybersecurity, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in a technical field, and certifications like CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or Certified Ethical Hacker carry real weight in hiring decisions. New York's dense concentration of financial firms and healthcare systems also means familiarity with compliance frameworks like NIST and HIPAA gives candidates a concrete edge.
How much do cybersecurities make in New York?
Cybersecurities in New York earn a median of about $134,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,110 for the lowest 10% to over $216,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cybersecurity professionals in New York?
Employers hiring cybersecurity professionals in New York right now include New York Life, Bloomberg, and OpenAI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's financial services sector, anchored in Lower Manhattan, drives especially consistent demand, with large banks, insurance carriers, and fintech firms posting across threat analysis, security engineering, and compliance roles year-round.
Which New York cities have the most cybersecurity jobs?
The cities with the most cybersecurity openings in New York are New York, New York City, and Bronx. New York City dominates because of its concentration of global financial institutions, major hospital networks, and technology companies, while Albany draws consistent demand from New York State government agencies, the Office of Information Technology Services, and regulated utilities headquartered in the Capital Region.
Are there remote cybersecurity jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. Cybersecurity is one of the more remote-compatible technical disciplines because much of the work involves monitoring systems, analyzing data, and managing security tools that are accessible from anywhere. About 37% of cybersecurity openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Roles in threat intelligence, security operations, and cloud security tend to have the most remote flexibility, while on-site network engineering and physical security work remains location-dependent.
How can I get hired as a cybersecurity professional in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a help desk or IT support role at a large New York employer, then a lateral move into a junior security analyst position once you have system access and exposure to incident workflows. New York City's large financial institutions and hospital networks like Northwell Health and NYC Health and Hospitals run structured associate and rotation programs that take candidates without dedicated security backgrounds. A CompTIA Security+ certification and a home lab or capture-the-flag portfolio demonstrably strengthens early applications.
Where can I find and apply to cybersecurity jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to cybersecurity jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search by city or specialty to narrow the results to roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
