Data Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data manager in California?
Most data manager roles in California require a bachelor's degree in information management, computer science, or a related field, though employers in healthcare often prefer candidates familiar with health informatics standards. California has no state-issued license specific to data management, but professionals working in healthcare data may pursue credentials such as the Registered Health Information Administrator through the American Health Information Management Association, which carries strong recognition among California hospital systems and health networks.
How much do data managers make in California?
Data managers in California earn a median of about $113,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,410 for the lowest 10% to over $178,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data managers in California?
Employers hiring data managers in California right now include Apple, TikTok, and Walmart, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of tech headquarters, large health systems, and entertainment studios means demand cuts across multiple industries rather than clustering in a single sector.
Which California cities have the most data manager jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Cupertino have the most data manager openings in California. San Francisco leads because of its dense concentration of technology companies and financial services firms, Los Angeles draws significant volume from entertainment, healthcare, and media organizations, and San Diego's biotech and defense sectors generate consistent demand for professionals who manage research and operational data.
Are there remote data manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 27% of data manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how naturally the work fits a distributed environment. Roles focused on cloud data governance, analytics platform management, and enterprise data strategy tend to have the highest remote availability, while positions requiring hands-on database administration within regulated industries like healthcare are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a data manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a data coordinator, data analyst, or junior database administrator role and building toward management from there. Large California employers like Kaiser Permanente, UC Health systems, and major tech firms in the Bay Area regularly hire associate-level candidates and offer internal advancement programs. A portfolio demonstrating SQL proficiency, a cloud certification from AWS or Google Cloud, or a health informatics credential gives candidates a measurable edge when competing for first-role openings.
Where can I find and apply to data manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to data manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employer. No profile creation is required to view or apply to listings.
