Facilities Maintenance Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a facilities maintenance technician in New York?
Most facilities maintenance technicians in New York enter the field through a vocational program, community college certificate, or apprenticeship covering electrical, HVAC, and plumbing fundamentals. New York does not require a single statewide license for the general role, but technicians who work on refrigeration or HVAC systems must hold an EPA Section 608 certification, and those performing electrical work beyond routine maintenance may need to meet New York City or county-level licensing requirements depending on the scope of work.
Which companies hire facilities maintenance technicians in New York?
New York facilities maintenance technician roles are posted by Walmart, City Winery, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Large hospital systems, university campuses, transit authorities, and commercial real estate management firms represent the most consistent sources of open positions across the state.
Which New York cities have the most facilities maintenance technician jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Syracuse have the most facilities maintenance technician openings in New York right now. New York City dominates the distribution because of its enormous commercial, residential, and institutional building stock, while Buffalo and Albany support steady demand through healthcare systems, state government facilities, and manufacturing operations that require ongoing preventive maintenance and repair coverage.
Are there remote facilities maintenance technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of facilities maintenance technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on, on-site nature of the work. The small share of remote-eligible positions typically involves facilities scheduling, work-order management, or systems monitoring roles that do not require a physical presence on the job site.
How can I get hired as a facilities maintenance technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a maintenance helper or porter role with a large New York property management company, hospital system, or university, where structured on-the-job training is common. Employers like New York-Presbyterian and the City University of New York system regularly hire candidates at the associate level and promote from within. Completing an EPA Section 608 certification before applying gives candidates a measurable edge, and graduates of BOCES trade programs in New York have a direct pipeline into entry maintenance positions.
Where can I find and apply to facilities maintenance technician jobs in New York?
