Facilities Maintenance Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a facilities maintenance technician in New York?
Most facilities maintenance technicians in New York enter through a vocational program, community college certificate, or apprenticeship covering HVAC, electrical, or plumbing systems, then apply to building maintenance or operations assistant roles. New York City roles in larger commercial or residential buildings often require specific NYC Department of Buildings certificates of fitness or operating permits depending on the systems you work on. Technicians working on refrigeration or refrigerant-handling equipment also need an EPA Section 608 certification, which is federally required regardless of state.
How much do facilities maintenance technicians make in New York?
Facilities maintenance technicians in New York earn a median of about $57,790 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,010 for the lowest 10% to over $83,570 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire facilities maintenance technicians in New York?
Employers hiring facilities maintenance technicians in New York right now include Walmart, Cytiva, and Danaher Corporation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large institutional employers, including hospital networks, university systems, and commercial property management firms, tend to post the most consistent volume of openings across the state year-round.
Which New York cities have the most facilities maintenance technician jobs?
Hauppauge, Batavia, and Cortland have the most facilities maintenance technician openings in New York right now. New York City dominates the volume given its density of commercial towers, hospitals, and large residential complexes, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through their healthcare campuses, state government facilities, and expanding higher education institutions.
Are there remote facilities maintenance technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Facilities maintenance technician work is fundamentally hands-on and tied to physical equipment and buildings, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 0% of facilities maintenance technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those listings typically cover coordination, scheduling, or facilities management functions rather than direct technical work.
How can I get hired as a facilities maintenance technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to building porter, maintenance helper, or groundskeeper roles at large residential property management companies or hospital systems, where on-the-job exposure to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work is built into the position. New York City Housing Authority and SUNY campus facilities departments regularly hire entry-level building attendants and train them toward full technician roles. Completing an OSHA 10 card and an EPA Section 608 certification before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over others without site experience.
Where can I find and apply to facilities maintenance technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to facilities maintenance technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
